Day 31- Total Recall (1990) / (2012) - Dave The producers watched the old movie and decided that the essence of "Total Recall" was a hooker with 3 breasts and kept that part. Seriously? Was that the only part they could recall? RECALL! Get it? (crickets) OK, may not. Moving on. Just about everything else went out the window. That's what happens when you recast Arnold Schwarzenegger with Colin Farrell. Melanie Says - Excuse me while I sit over here laughing at this whole concept. Total Recall was a classic! Even if you updated it to be "Basically the same" - the dated cringy effects are part of what makes this so much fun to go back and rewatch! And I'm sorry - I love Colin Farrell in MANY things - but as a replacement for Arnie in this - JUST NOOOOOO!!!!!! I didn't even bother past the trailer, it was just a ridiculous idea! Day 30- Roswell (1999) / Roswell, New Mexico (2019) - Jenn Another show, another CW remake. Like really, have you run out of ideas CW? but whatever! Roswell is another one I absolutely adored even though as usual I was late to the watch party for it. Though the remake I can say is absolutely horrible and I’m putting that nicely, (Don’t get me wrong I did like a few aspects of the remake but that was ruined by the CW early on), giving up on their version of it really wasn’t that hard for me. The names of the characters remain the same, but other than that there's nothing the same about the original and it’s remake. Unlike the original the kids are no longer in high school, so giving us a grown up version is where this started. Nothing wrong with that unless you don’t know what you’re doing and they don’t. I know I’m being harsh but the original was a masterpiece. So if you’ve seen that then I’d skip the remake for your own benefit. But then again if you haven’t, you may enjoy the Roswell remake. Day 29- Death On The Nile (1978) / (2022) - Dave Keeping it set in the same era as the books and previous movie, a few tweaks and turns were added. A character from “Murder on the Orient Express” comes aboard, a few different relationships, and a different death. But one of the biggest changes is Mia Farrow and Emma Mackey’s portrayal of the same character. Mia was much more menacing and chaotic and Emma was more laid back like “yeah, I’m still here. Deal with it.” Melanie Says - The Original wins hands down for me. I couldn't stand the new Murder On The Orient Express version and the trailer for Death On The Nile looked about the same so I am saving my 2 hours! Plus have you seen the cast for the 1978 version? Day 28- The Craft (1996) / The Craft: Legacy (2021) - Melanie The original version is a cult classic. I don't think anyone would argue that point, and even today it remains one of my favorite witchcraft based movies. When I heard they were going to "remake" it I have to say I was not a fan, That being said - the new really isn't bad. Whilst I am sure that it will never achieve the same cult status as its predecessor, this one is still worth a watch. This new version definitely feels like it skews younger than the original. Despite the girls being the same age, the new incarnation has a much younger feel, and is probably more how teenagers who just discovered they had powers would act. I do give the movie huge kudos for embracing a progressive cast, without making it feel like politics are being thrown at you. They have a trans actress as one of the four stars, and honestly she is amazing. There are only a couple of references to her being trans in the movie, and it is so subtle that Greg actually hit google to see if it was true. Where this movie could have become preachy, it actually feels more about women supporting women (well I guess girls supporting girls but you get the idea). There are some nice nods, and a tie in to the original that is shown in the trailers, (don't get hung up on this though - it's SUCH a small part of the tale - which is a little disappointing and I was really holding out for a sequel that apparently isn't coming). This is a modern take which actually uses the correct magical terms (despite them always shifting the corners). The original though - has to have the win! Dave Says - Wow. They made a movie about witches and didn't call it “Charmed”! Go figure! Oh yeah, because Charmed didn't exist yet. It could be considered the darker side of the Halliwells. Or if they went bad. Day 27 - Dragnet (1951) / (1987) / (2003) - Dave From TV to feature film (that bellyflopped at the box office) and back to TV again. This title has been through the ringer. The classic tv show was a bit before my time so I don't know much about that but I heard of it when the movie was made. Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd! What can go wrong? Well, apparently a lot can. Personally I like a dumb comedy from time to time. And the 80’s was the right time for it. I never bothered with the 2003 version. Melanie Says - I saw a lot of the original 50s version in reruns. They showed them a lot in England. I personally didn't like the casting and thought that they took the humor and completely screwed it up. I think they read the theme wrong - and it showed. It didn't resonate with original fans - or reach new fans. By the time it got to 2003 I just didn't care. The original for me all the way! Day 26- Walker Texas Ranger (1983) / Walker (2021) - Jenn The eyes of a ranger are upon you, that’s the opener to a very well loved and popular show called Walker Texas Ranger, so when I heard that The CW was doing a remake I thought alright I’ll give it a try, and boy did I give it a try but after awhile like with most CW shows I just lost interest. Not only that it’s nothing like it’s predecessor, nothing at all, well maybe except for the name Walker and that he’s a ranger. I don’t know, sometimes with all these remakes they do I just feel like it’s because they’ve run out of original ideas. So for me it’s a pass on the remake. I’ll just go watch some reruns of the original Melanie Says - My dad absolutely loved the original. He used to watch the reruns all the time. Greg and I watched the first few episodes of the remake, but it just didn't work for us. I often wonder what my Dad would have thought - my bet would be he would head on back to the reruns too. Day 25 - Poltergeist - (1982) / (2015) - Dave Another classic they tried to redo and caught themselves in a bind. Carol Anne’s classic “they’re heeeere” can not be tampered with and can not be duplicated. If they try to copy it, they’ll never hear the end of it. So they went with a simple “they’re here” and it just comes up flat. The scene seems to lose something but its just “damned if you do, and damned if you don't” type of thing. Overall, it wasn't bad but like most of these you have to ask yourself if it was really necessary. Melanie Says - The original movie is so full of superstition and talk of the franchise being cursed, that I don't think any remake would ever be able to shadow it. Day 24 - Overboard - (1987) / (2018) - Jenn Overboard is definitely a classic in my opinion and I absolutely adore it, so when they decided to remake it but in a different way I thought I don’t know, but why not. So I went to see it and all I can say from that experience is why? Why? Why? This is one of those instances that they should of just left well enough alone. The remake was horrible, and if you’ve seen it you may understand just what I mean, though some may of liked it as well, but after seeing the original I honestly don’t get how anyone could like or enjoy the remake of Overboard. Dave Says - Absolutely loved the original. I can't tell you how many times I watched that one and just laughed and laughed! I can, however, tell you how many times I watched the remake. Zero. Day 23 - Night Of The Demons - (1988) / (2009) - Dave Why must they mess with horror classics? This one probably could have been much worse but it really shouldn't have been messed with. Day 22 - Mortal Kombat - (1995) / (2021) - Melanie MORTAL KOMBAT *starts singing techno music* ...... OK so I LOVED this game back in the day, and honestly, I would still play it now if I had a newer game system ... and the game! The 1995 movie is definitely cheesy, but that doesn't necessarily mean bad. The biggest problem it has is that it was edited to a "more acceptable" PG 13 version. For whatever crazy reason, known only to the movie studios, they thought their key demographic would be teenage boys whose parents wouldn't be taking them to an R-Rated movie. Total fail! One of the things about the game was the insane death scenes, to epic cries of "FINISH HIM" and of course "FATALITY". With a 13 rating there was no way to get in all the blood, the gore, and honestly all the violence I wanted to see. That being said it does have the game's iconic music, and it does feature the epic tournament, and for that alone I will applaud it. With 2021 version, I wasn't interested in the character backstories. When I used to play I was the kind of person that skipped all that stuff and just wanted to fight ..... and that's what I wanted in this movie - FIGHT SCENES! With that being said, when this version had them, they were epic. Blood and gore and everything that I would have LOVED to have seen in the earlier version. The two big misses though were 1. The lack of the techno soundtrack (although it might only have been me and Greg that missed that lol), and 2. NO TOURNAMENT! Lots of talk about the epic tournament with the champions for Earth Realm, but no actual tournament itself, with the movie focusing more on the set up and various other fights. Overall both movies work in their own way. For me Christopher Lambert stole the role of Lord Raiden giving the 1995 version a huge advantage, but the R Rated violence of the 2021 version was just a far better plan and felt more like the game I used to play. Jenn Says - Finish Him! These famous words go with a very popular game that was made into a movie, yes "Mortal Kombat", well it was also recently just remade and I have to say this is a instance where I enjoyed the remake more than the original. not because the original was bad or anything but because the remake gave you more story and more backstory into the characters history, and I’m a sucker when it comes to a characters backstory and origins. I absolutely love it. Dave Says - The first set of movies are filled with cheese and fights. The newer one is heavier on plot and blood. Day 21 - The Addams Family (1964) / (1991) / (2019) - Jenn The Addams Family has honestly had so many remakes from series to movie, and then from movie to animation movie. I have to say though that this is one case where I actually enjoy everything that they’ve done. I’ve seen a few episodes of the show, and then the movies with Cristina Ricci as Wednesday, which honestly I think are my favorite ones. Then most recently there was the animated movies, well two that is and I also saw them both, they where cute but one critique about those where that they didn’t seem like true Addams Family, maybe they tried to lighten it more up for kids? I don’t know, they weren’t bad just not the Addams’s I’m use to. Also on Netflix there’s a Wednesday series coming, all about my girl Wednesday Addams so I can’t wait to see where they take that, so as this family goes. I say just watch them all, because honestly you can’t go wrong Melanie Says - The 1991 movies are probably my favorite versions too. I watched the original series (not when it first aired but I have seen them all through the years) and I love them too. I think the 1991 movies did a phenomenal job with the casting and there's something about it that just resonates. I didn't watch the animated versions because they felt "young" from the trailers and Jenn's opinion sealed the deal for me. Dave Says - I’m more old school. Even though the old series was before my time, I’d always watch reruns of it in syndication along with The Munsters (which could be on our next reboot list). They will forever be in my heart and what I think of when I hear the name. It goes back to everyone’s childhood when you first watched. Day 20 - A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) / (2010) - Dave Most of my problems with this one isn't even about the plot. Change a few things up so you aren't making the same movie over again, in this case involves going back to the original idea for the original film. Throw in a few references to the classic. Ok, works for me. But then you screw up the blu-ray release. You have deleted scenes, a completely changed opening kill scene that they reference later on, which now makes no sense and don't even have it ln the bonus features. Fail! Melanie Says - One Two Freddy's coming for you ....... I mean you HAVE to give this one to the original PLUS it has Johnny Depp which means automatic winner for me lol. Seriously thought we watched the remake and it was just meh. Day 19 - Hairspray 1988 / 2007 - Jenn Hairspray has to be one of my absolute favorite musicals. I love the story and I love the music, but then I heard that there was a original Hairspray and it wasn’t a musical. Say what now! That’s right! NOT a musical. I was shocked, but decided I might enjoy it, so checked it out. It basically has the same story line but like I said just without the music. Honestly, this is one time where I say the remake definitely outshines the original in every way or is that just because I’m a musicals freak. Well either way if you like musicals go with the newer hairspray, but if not I’d say the original is more up your alley. Melanie Says - Oh I LOVE the original. Love Love Love it! Day 18 - Pet Sematary 1989 / 2019 - Dave Everything was playing out the way it did in the original. Until a fateful left turn spiraled things in the opposite direction keeping viewers on their toes and looking out for changes. Melanie Says - The original is one of my all time Stephen King adaptations. Gage is by far one of the creepiest horror kids out there and I think he's amazing. Day 17 - Charmed - (1998) / (2018) - Melanie I was late to the party with Charmed. Not moving here until the early 2000s I had a lot of catching up to do. I think it was probably shown in England but I never remembered seeing it until after I moved here. The original series had pretty much everything, and the for first few seasons there were no witchy dramas that could compare. For me this was literally like the Buffy for Witches! There was drama, there were tears ... I remember being so shocked that Pru was replaced, but they defied the odds and the show kept performing. As with many shows, this went on too long, and there were some inconsistencies they had to fight to cover (some successful and some not so), and I will forever remain Team Cole! (Also Team Evil Phoebe lol). AND THEN CAME THE REMAKE ....... NOPE! I have to wonder if like me, they felt the original had Buffy for witches vibes, and felt the need to bring in a Giles character for the whitelighter (assuming the guy in the trailer is their whitelighter). Not going to lie, I had pretty much decided when the original cast wasn't on board that I wasn't going to be watching, but even without that THE TRAILER WAS AWFUL! Talk about something that just didn't need to be done. And now, like with the original, there was a cast change at season 3. UNLIKE the original, this group didn't survive and the show was cancelled. (I mean I actually know that this technically WASN'T the reason for the cancellation - but you know - karma and all that jazz). Jenn Says - I haven’t seen this whole series, but from the episodes I have seen I really like it, maybe one day I’ll go and just binge it all from the beginning, so seeing this remake again like a dummy I thought why not, looking at you CW, maybe it’s just time to stop now, but anyways charmed the remake is by far the worse remake of anything that I’ve ever seen and should be canceled but unfortunately it has not been. (UPDATE SINCE WRITTEN IT NOW HAS BEEN). Why can’t they just leave classics the well enough alone Dave Says - One of the most useless remakes ever. You could do a billion and one stories about witches. It doesn't have to be The Charmed Ones. The original wasn't that old and as stated before, DVD’s are available if you wanted to watch it. Hard pass on the reboot. Now they even find themself in the same predicament with one of the actresses after Season 3. Are we going to name this The Charmed Syndrome or The Doherty Syndrome? Day 16 - Annie (1982) / 2014 - Jenn I love musicals, and this movie is no exception. It’s even in my top five and that’s Annie. This movie has been retold and retold, with the most recent version being a live stage performance which I enjoyed. This story about a little red headed orphan, even in some of the newer versions the red headed part does change. Not sure how I felt about that but moving on. She ends up winning the heart of Daddy Warbucks and finds out maybe happy endings are real after all. Though I have to say all versions are good in their own way, my favorite still has to be the original, even though a few Annie remakes are definitely close seconds. Melanie Says - I like musicals too but even the first one doesn't hit high on my watch list so I have skipped all the others. Dave Says - One addition I'll add to this is the inspiration it gave. The 1987 series "Rags to Riches" was a clear example but instead of a rich guy adopting one kid, it was several. And also set to music. But this series only lasted one season so it was quickly forgotten. The names were changed so it isn't exactly a remake but I would definitely file it under "inspired by" Have you seen it? Day 15 - Childs Play/Chucky (1988-2017) (2019) (2021) - Jenn As you should all know by now dear readers, is that I hate horror movies, well that is except Chucky. There’s just something about that doll that I love. Maybe it’s because he’s not to scary, or it could just be because I love Tiffany and the idea of a possessed doll by the infamous Charles Lee Ray. Whatever the case is, this doll doesn’t disappoint. Well that is until I saw the Chucky movie remake, even the show got it right but this did not! A chip is what’s causing Chucky to go crazy. Are you kidding me? A chip? No, just no! I’m sorry but if you like this remake then good for you but I just can’t. It’s not Chucky and never will be to me, so I’ll just sit back and pretend that the Chucky movie remake never happened. Melanie Says - Followers of the show will know that Em loves EVERYTHING Chucky related and that includes the remake movie. Fun Fact - the story for that is actually closer to the original script that was going to have the doll and the kid be "Blood Brothers" but that's a whole other thing. I don't mind any of them but the 1st movie is the best for me. Partly because it was just so different from anything else being done at that time. (As a note the 3rd one was banned in the UK for a while as people connected it with an horrific murder - also it's the only one they switch up Andy in - which to me was a fail anyway.) The TV series was a fail for me and Greg - but I think that's because we are old and felt the teenagers shouldn't be acting like that - but everyone else disagrees lol. Dave Says - OK, this one is a bit of a roller coaster ride. I loved the original when it first came out. The 2nd one was ok. The 3rd I was less impressed with. Andy was getting older. It didn't have the right feel. The 7 year gap between the 3rd and 4th left a lot to be desired and I wasn't sure I wanted to go back. They were taking a turn and a change in the tempo and pacing and going more laughs. I had my doubts. So I out off watching part 4 and 5 for a while. For all the camp and humor, they were pretty good though. Things took a more serious turn again with the 6th and 7th movie in the franchise. Then they made the fatal mistake of the remake. They were still on this series and making new movies and new people come along and want to do their own Childs Play movie which makes the timeline a total clusterfuck. New voice of Chucky, no voodoo, randomly chooses the name Chucky. Nothing was working for me in this. Then the original creator Don Mancini steers the ship into the series which takes place after his last movie. Lots of ups and downs in this. Pacing is a little odd since they limit to one kill per episode. If they didn't, they’d have no cast left after 3 episodes. Day 14 - Fright Night 1985 / 2011 - Melanie Welcome to Fright Night .... For Real! This for me is the perfect example of a remake done correctly. Now MAYBE I was a little bit biased because we had David Tennant running around in skin tight leather dressed like Criss Angel (I mean seriously I would have JUST watched it for that), but seriously? The did a good job. The original 80's is a classic in this house and has been watched more times than I can count. The dance scene at the club - still one of my favs and probably my BIGGEST complaint about the remake. The set up was right there ..... why didn't they use it an update it for the 2000s!!! (Bonus video clip of the dance scene below lol) The remake held the right balance of original content with appropriate nods to the original (including a fabulous cameo by Chris Sarandon so you get both versions on screen at one point - although Chris wasn't a vampire - the best part - they didn't name him until the credits and they just had JD for the character. Love things like that. As a note it is also the second vampire movie that we have talked about lately that featured the late Anton Yelchin. The original is more campy / typical 80s horror where as the 2011 version definitely played more expensive - but both versions for me are a winner! Dave Says - Actually not a bad remake. One thing I kept thinking though is that the actors of Evil Ed and Charlie should have been switched. The callbacks, references and cameo from original cast member are all there. Day 13 - Friday the 13th 1980 / 2009 - Dave This is an example of learning from the original and still giving some people a reason to complain. Recap— everyone associates Friday the 13th with Jason and associates Jason with the hockey mask. So in the remake, we limit Jason’s mother to the beginning and her death scene. Jason is now featured in the movie and finds his mask in this one instead of waiting 3 movies. And people complained that Jason’s mother was the original killer, not Jason. (insert headslap here) If they had his mother as the killer, they would have complained that she isn't the face of the franchise. Melanie Says - I watched the original movies back in the day but I don't think we bothered with the remake. Just not big enough Jason fans to start with was our biggest issue. Day 12 - Cheaper By The Dozen 2003 / 2022 - Jenn Cheaper by the dozen is that cute little comedy with Steve Martin about the twelve kids that move because their father got a new job, and there was even a sequel which wasn’t bad. So when I saw that Disney plus was making a re-make I thought alright I’ll check it out, even though I don’t have a good track record with them. So watching it one night I thought this reminds me of "Yours, Mine and Ours" more than it does "Cheaper by the Dozen". You know that movie where the mom and dad marry and merge their already existing families? Well that is what this cheaper by the dozen reminds me of, and not the actual original cheaper by the dozen, so the title is kind of misleading. Though if you separate them this movie is actually not bad so I would say give it a try and see what you think. Melanie Says - I vaguely remember the 1st movie and from the trailer this I see what you mean about the whole blended family set up. Might give it a go as it does look kinda cute. Day 11 - The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - 2009 (Sweden) / 2011 (US) - Dave The Swedish versions of the trilogy will always be superior to me. If it wasn't for them, they wouldn't have had the American remake. They tweaked things and changed a few spots for whatever reason but never made the 2 follow up sequels to the US one. Day 10 -House On Haunted Hill 1959 / 1999 - Melanie Let me start by saying I love both versions of this movie. The original is a Vincent Price classic, and you have to respect that, and the remake upped the stakes, pushed some boundaries, and has James Marsters in it (for about 2 minutes lol). 40 years is a long time especially in the movie world and these movies definitely reflect that. It's crazy that the more recent version was STILL over 20 years ago! With the way movies are going we are probably due for a new one any time now. Dave Says - I loved the original with Vincent Price. Day 9 - Prom Night 1980 / 2008 - Dave This one was marketed as a remake but really had very little to do with the original. And it wasn't even horror. I’d call it more suspense or a psychological thriller if anything. But definitely not horror. Total disappointment on that regard. If I didn't go in expecting horror, I actually might not have been as let down. Melanie says - I agree the new version definitely skews more thriller even though it's labelled horror but I didn't mind it. I also agree though the link to the original is tenuous at best. Day 8 - How I Met Your Mother (2005) / How I Met Your Father (2022) - Jenn "How I met your Father" is kind of a remake from "how I met your mother", but with a twist. Instead of the father telling the story to the child it’s the mother. Also you never knew who the mother is until the very end, but in how I met your father they change that, you still have no idea who the father is, but you’ve already met him in the very first episode. Interesting, right? So this pretty much leaves you guessing as who it could possibly be. I wasn’t a fan of how I met your mother, but I’m loving how I met your father, though like Dave said there’s a lot of throw backs to how I met your mother, even with one of the guys living above the very bar that the friends went to in how I met your mother. Dave Says - Well technically more of a reboot playing off the similar style and concept of How I Met Your Mother. I joined that party a little late. Well, a lot late. I binged it right after the series ended. So I was a little hesitant about this one but gave it a shot anyway. Pretty good and a few references to HIMYM for your viewing pleasure. Melanie says - I used to watch How I Met Your Mother - and then I read a spoiler about the ending which irritated the hell out of me so never watched it - and I was still bitter about investing all the time in that so didn't and won't be watching the spin off lol. Day 7 - Ghosts (UK) 2019 / (US) 2021 - Melanie OK so I know this one is a little more contentious. When CBS announced that they were going to make yet another US version of a hit UK show I thought well at least this has a premise that can be changed to make it fit. But did they do that? NOPE - instead they literally tried to use basically the SAME UK CHARACTERS (which made NO sense with US history) and use the same stories - at least that's what I gleaned from the trailers and the first 3 minutes Greg and I watched. Yep THREE MINUTES - that was all it took for us to say NO THANK YOU! They even tried to match the lead couple as closely as possible to the original pair. Now the US version has gone on to win awards - so I can only assume that it is because most Americans are unaware of the far superior original but for me - well as with other things I don't like I just pretend as much as possible the remake doesn't exist!
