Welcome to February's 28 Days Of Sequels! Every day throughout February one of our VIPers (Dave, Jenn, Or Melanie) with occasional comments from the others will present a movie sequel complete with a trailer! The big difference with this list is they aren't all winners that we loved. Some were disappointments and some just trainwrecks. Hollywood is short on original ideas so when one hits big, they milk it for all its worth and squeeze it dry. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Day 28 - Staying Alive (Mel)Saturday Night Fever was a huge hit - I expect most people have heard of it even if they haven't seen it. For me though - the sequel that came out 5 years later won the day. Musers that have been around might remember I even did a forgotten feature Friday about it (video included below), where I explained how I love this more than the original and why. Don't get me wrong - this is no cinematic masterpiece by any means. Rather it's a dance movie (which you can totally watch without having seen Saturday Night Fever), with a crazy Broadway Show (Satan's Alley), and you can just sit back and remember how awesome the 80s were! Have you seen it? What did you think? Stream It Or Skip It? Be sure to let us know in the comments below!
Not currently streaming free on Prime (unlike when I filmed the forgotten feature Friday) but it is available to rent - or watch for free with your Cinemax trial. When I first heard they were making this sequel, my first thought was "How?". But instead of trying to make the same movie over again, it was a progression. A lot of changes were made from the original draft. But after negative test reviews, some reshoots were in order to avoid a near disaster killing the franchise and tarnishing the mark of the original.
Melanie - This one time ... at band camp ..... I watched all these movies and they were OK! Crude humor that gets old after a fashion but some classic lines that would probably never make it on screen today but Eugene Levy never fails to disappoint!

Day 26 - Another 9 1/2 Weeks AKA Love In Paris (Mel)I LOVED 9 1/2 Weeks - I mean not then ending, but the premise, the chemistry, the feel. To this day that movie is one of my favorites and the main theme is often played on my spotify list (Slave to Love - you can hear it here - with clips from the movie). Dark and sexy, a tale of obsession, of pushing boundaries, of questions why? And then 10 years later they decided that hey - maybe we should follow up with what happened after. The short answer is they just shouldn't have! Following Mickey Rourke's character as he chases the high he felt 10 years before, with Kim Bassinger not agreeing to be in the sequel- you ended up with a not so good looking Mickey (age did him no favors), trying to recreate key moments in the original - with a new woman - and comments about how she read all about it in the diary. A poor attempt to recapture the rare magic that was 9 1/2 weeks. Now if you haven't seen that one? You should check it out ASAP! Have you seen it? What did you think? Stream It Or Skip It? More magic and mayhem, along with a character change. I didn't quite like this one as much as the original but still a good addition to the film series.
Melanie - As much as I love Lizzy Caplan, she didn't quite work for me as well as Isla Fisher did in the first one. The story was OK - but I think the novelty wow factor the first one carried was inevitably diminished in the second one. Still, in the grand scheme of things - worth a watch if you enjoyed the first.

Day 24 - Police Academy 2 (Dave)The "Police Academy" franchise is an odd one. Sure, it went downhill eventually but they took a movie with a hard R rating that was a success and started to downgrade it to PG 13, then down to PG. Same slapstick comedy and humor but toned down sexuality and innuendos for a wider audience. It worked for a bit but then got old. Jenn Says - "Police Academy" is one of those movies you’re not really sure you’ll like until you actually see it. I mean what can they really do with a movie about a police academy, but yet when I saw it I was surprised. So when I found out that there would be another I was all in. Was it as good as the first? Well in my honest opinion no, and neither where the ones that followed. Did I enjoy them? Yes, and are they worth a watch but none will ever come close to the first one. Melanie Says - Personally, I am in the camp of watch the first and forget the rest. Having read what Dave said about the ratings it totally makes sense. They took something that was unique and original, toned it down and repeated the lame jokes ad infinitum and it just lost all appeal. Sad - but true. Have you seen it? What did you think? Day 23 - Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (Dave)
Before Marvel reboots this film series for the 4th time, lets revisit this one. I don't care how much hate these Jessica Alba movie get, I loved them. This is the only version that got a sequel. The low budget 1994 wasn't even officially released and the 2015 reboot failed miserably. But these I enjoyed. Marvel will probably try to integrate it into the whole MCU by tying in the story or cross-referencing characters, guest appearances, etc. But I don't think they need that. FF can stand on its own. They don't need to have all the characters crossover.
Melanie - Em actually loves these versions. We have watched them several times. They have two of my fav actors in them - Ioan Gruffudd & Julian McMahon - and yes compared to the crazy Marvel movies available nowadays these are doomed to be relegated to the back. BUT If you like the Marvel Universe I would still say check them out and if you haven't seen them before watch for Chris Evans from before he was Captain America. I mean I am not even a big Marvel fan - then again maybe that's why I like them! It's kind of like if Legends of Tomorrow got together to make a Marvel movie lol

I think pretty much everyone has heard of the movie Purple Rain - or at least is vaguely aware that the movie exists with it's iconic soundtrack but did you know there was a sequel? Not even an "unofficial sequel", Graffiti Bridge is the follow up story to Purple Rain. It's literally the what comes next.
Where Purple Rain received critical acclaim, Graffiti Bridge seemed to garner nothing but criticism and is often listed as one of the worst movies of the 90's. Personally I disagree. Although it doesn't deal with some of the more serious issues that Purple Rain incorporated, this to me, still felt very similar. The soundtrack is phenomenal (I included the Spotify listing below), and highly recommend "The Question of You", "Joy in Repetition", "Still Would Stand All Time", and of course probably the best known song from this album, "Thieves in the Temple". People can say what they want to about Prince and all his eccentricities, but he had a presence on stage and screen that few can compare to. Even haters have to recognize that his Super Bowl performance is regarded as one of the best of all time. Even the heavens agreed, raining down to complete the Purple Rain performance. If you have seen and enjoyed Purple Rain, I highly recommend the sequel. You can even stream if for free on Tubi right now!

Day 20 - Sing 2(Jenn)Now I’m one to always say if I think a movie should have a sequel or not and "Sing" is definitely one that I thought didn’t need it, but what’s that saying you know the one, the one about being proven wrong and boy was I. "Sing 2" was absolutely needed, and if you’ve already seen it you might understand exactly what I mean. It elaborates on the first without getting ridiculous, and that’s all I’ll say because no spoilers. Though I think the second movie ended it well and hopefully there won’t be another because honestly I don’t know where they could go from there. Good sequel but one of the most debatable animation sequences in history. The technology was available to make it look better but I believe for a flashback sequence from the 1940's, it was purposely done in the 40's style so it looks a biut more crude and less polished. I think it works for the movie. Some didn't think so.
Melanie - I have never watched any of the Hellboy movies although I do have a couple of the pops - mainly because Greg saw a couple that reminded him of us lol

Followers of the page probably won't be too surprised that I couldn't let e sequel list go through without adding this one. Dracula 2000 (the first movie) featured Gerard Butler as Dracula and although many wouldn't recognize him in the role - he was fabulous. A few years after the Dracula 2000 came the sequel Dracula II Ascension. By this time Gerard Butler was on to bigger and better things, and whilst the Dracula character doesn't really work for me overall (he kinda reminds me of a generic Spike - just really bad decisions all round), this is possibly one of my favorite stories! Without spoilers - this is modern day Dracula type story that I can get behind! (And there is a third but we will all just pretend that 3rd abomination doesn't exist).
Dave Says - I think this needs a rewatch. Don't remember much about it.

This one suffered from Hangover Syndrome. (See More About That On This Week's Win It Wednesday Post) They tried to incorporate too much that worked in the first one into the sequel. Aside from a so-so script, it was also missing John Cusack.
Jenn Says - What can I say except this is a huge skip for me. It’s so repetitive that honestly if you’ve seen the first one then you’ve seen this one, so why waste those few hours of your life. If you want to watch it though go ahead, but you’ll see what I mean if you do.
Melanie Says - I wasn't a huge fan of the first one - and now when I hear the title for either all I can think of is "High School Hot Tub" - and think I'd rather watch that lol

Day 16 - Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (aka Bridget Jones 2) (Mel) This is the Bridget Jones movie that generally I pretend doesn't exist, but when Dave said "including bad sequels" I knew I had to add it. If I watch them I watch the first (which I love), and the third (which I also love), and you can totally ignore the trainwreck also known as The Edge Of Reason. This is the perfect example of trying to use the same formula to recreate gold, and creating something sludgy and awful instead. They started with an idea that was rubbish, and created a movie that was the same. Dave - I think my ex made me watch this with her. That's pretty much all you need to know about my take on this one. Day 15 - XXX2: State of the Union (Dave)They had a buget hit with XXX. Vin Diesel was bringing in a new action series to rival the Bond movies for a new generation. But then (cue dramatic music) Vin Diesel left and they brought in Ice Cube to be a new XXX. Guess it tried to show it could be anyone and not just a certain character. Didn't fare too well, so he came back for the 3rd but they kept the idea of having several XXX's. Melanie - Somehow I have never seen these. Not really sure why. They look like the sort of thing I would watch but somehow I haven't. I used to like Vin Diesel movies back in the day so maybe I will look out for them.. Have you seen it? What did you think? This one is a little weird for me. I don't remember watching the first one AT ALL. Greg assures me I did, but even when I watched this sequel, nothing really seemed familiar. I knew the basis premise, and the Twinkie thing, and the Double Tap thing, but the rest? Nope. That being said I really enjoyed this one. It seems that they did pretty much everything right. It has a lot of comedy in it, and should definitely be viewed with that in mind, but whether you have seen the first one or not if you like that kind of genre - this is a good one.
Dave Says - I was a little hesitant about this one but it turned out good. They waited long enough and didn't rush a story and script to hit it while it was hot. They made sure they had it right.
Jenn Says - Now I’m not usually one that enjoys anything to do with zombies but "Zombieland" is a different story. But now I’m talking "Zombieland 2", which was worth the wait. It was hilarious, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It expanded on the first, without getting stupid or losing its story. I highly suggest if you liked "Zombieland" and you haven’t seen the sequel, then you check it out immediately.

Day 13 - Santa Claus 2 (Jenn)You know those movies, the ones with Tim Allen as Scott Calvin, or Santa Clause. Well there’s three movies in that set though the third one you could honestly skip. But if you must watch it I’d say just watch the last fifteen minutes of it. Now the second movie is actually pretty good, just as well done as the first but only in this one the hunt is on for a Mrs Clause before Santa is gone forever. With the help of his son and other magical creatures does Santa pull it of, well I don’t know but I can say that this is a sequel you definitely shouldn’t skip. Melanie - I think by now everyone knows I love a Christmas movie. The Santa Claus movies are cute and funny. Personally I still prefer the 1985 "Santa Claus The Movie" - but with the new limited series heading to Disney+ now is probably a good time to watch them if you haven't. Have you seen it? 8 years after the original, Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy teamed up again for this sequel that added a bit more comedy since Eddie was becoming a bigger star.

So this movie gets a TON of hate but hear me out. If you watch this simply as a vampire movie (which you CAN do - I mean seriously there is no carry over from Interview with the Vampire and even less from the book), then this is a FABULOUS movie. The soundtrack is outstanding, Stuart Townsend makes a fabulous vampire (just looks nothing like Lestat), and Aaliya shows what a force to be reckoned with she could have become if not for the tragic plane crash that took her life.
The problem, for most people, is that it IS supposed to be based on the book "Queen Of The Damned" which is in fact the THIRD of the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, and other than the names used, and the rough vampire/rockband storyline, this has very little to do with any of it. The characters from the original stories are massacred to an extent where one of them I only realized who it was from the credits, they took bits from book 2 "The Vampire Lestat" and bits from book 3 "Queen Of The Damned" and smashed them together into an almost unrecognizable story. Despite ALL of that though I love this movie as a watch by itself, pretending that none of it relates to the book series. So much that Em and I watch it at least a couple of times a year, often more!
Dave Says -Didn't like this one nearly as much as "Interview With a Vampire". Never read the book though but heard from alot of readers that it was a mess since it mashed "The Vampire Lestat" and "Queen of the Damned" into one movie. I meant to read them to get the full story but never got around to it

Day 10 - Cruel Intentions 2 (Dave)This was a disaster from the start. The plan to make a tv series called "Manchester Prep" based on the movie. After filming 3 episodes that were deemed "unairable" someone had the idea to make a sequel. So they did some editing with the footage for the show, did some dubbing to change the names and filmed some new material for an ending and came up with this-- for better or worse. Mostly worse. Melanie - Definitely worse Dave! Ugh I LOVED the first movie! It was fabulous, had an amazing soundtrack, and then I saw this! Now I was in England at the time this was released and all we knew was that it was a "Prequel", Now knowing it was a scrapped TV show it makes so much sense as everything was crammed in, there was too much going on, and yet nothing happening. All it did for me was put me in a bad mood! The cast, whilst strong, just don't compare to the originals and even they can't save this trainwreck. Grease 2 is one of the few movies where I think the sequel is better than the original. Yup, I said it! And I am not taking it back. I KNOW it gets TONS of hate and makes almost every do not watch ever list BUT I DON'T CARE! The cast is fabulous, yes the story is ridiculous but did you watch the first one? It had a FLYING CAR AT THE END so let's not go there. The soundtrack is amazing, I can't even count the number of times belted out "Cool Rider" when I was younger, enough that I still know all the words today. You have a ridiculous talent show, motorcycles, and an English guy! What more could you ask for?
Jenn Says - This sequel is another one that absolutely has nothing to do with the first, well except for the name of the school, and the name of the T birds and pink ladies, and yes I mean "Grease 2". This sequel gets a lot of push back but to me I like it a lot. The guy wanting the girl he can’t have but changes to get her anyways, almost like the first but not entirely so if you like "Grease", then I think you’ll like "Grease 2" as well. I sure did.
Dave Says - I saw parts of this one in work recently. Seems like I saw it before though. Don't remember much about it.

Day 8 - A Christmas Story 2 (Jenn)
"A Christmas Story" is a Christmas movie staple that a lot of people watch every Christmas, but I bet you didn’t know there’s a sequel to it and yes this has the same characters in it as the first, just different actors because Ralphie is a bit older. This time it’s not a BB gun he wants, but a car. Just like last time he’ll stop at nothing to get it, even coming up with schemes just like last time. Though in the end he realizes maybe the car is not so important if you can get a person you love the one thing they’d like the most. I wasn’t so sure about this sequel, but I actually think it’s not bad and up to par with the first, which is hard to do.
Melanie - So Greg loves the first movie and I had no idea there was a sequel until Em and I randomly saw the DVD in a bargain bin at a store a few years back. We got it for Greg's Christmas stocking and the movie is still sitting unwrapped on the shelf lol

A modern classic if you will. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover were a great team in these movies. Joe Pesci was a great addition in this one.
Melanie Says - I remember reading about this years after it had come out. They added in more comedy and less "blood and drama". I did enjoy Joe Pesci's addition but think this is where the series definitely made the comedy/action decision. It's still a fun background movie and it had Patsy Kensit in it lol.

One of the few can live up to the original, in my mind anyways. Taking a step forward and showing that Axel has become friends with those that were working against him in the original.
Melanie says - I agree! They did a good job moving this story forward and developing the relationships. I also feel they definitely played more to the natural comedy in the sequel - not trying so hard to almost be a serious movie (which I sometimes felt with the first one).

Day 5 - Fright Night 2 (1988) (Mel)Oh I love the Fright Night movies! This is the sequel to the original 1988 movie (NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH FRIGHT NIGHT 2 - NEW BLOOD). It picks up after the end of the first movie with Charlie in college, trying to come to terms with what happened, and basically sitting in denial. It's cheesy, as was the original, but there is something about it that I really love. Julie Carmen stars and there is something quite mesmerizing about her (side note I also loved her in The Mouth Of Madness), so much so that as well as the trailer I have put the video for the main "dance" scene. Hmmmmm I loved the original dance scene from the first movie too - well not really a surprise - we all know I love a good (or even not so good) musical number! Dave Says - Its been ages since I seen this. I know I have a copy laying around here somewhere. I may have to dig it out again. Have you seen it? What did you think? Sadly streaming it doesn't seem to be an option anywhere so if you want to get your hands on it check 2nd hand stores or places like eBay as the only options.

We all know the movie "The Sandlot", well "The Sandlot 2" may not be as well known but for a sequel that doesn’t even have the same cast or even the same characters isn’t bad. You basically have the same premises as the first but in this a group of boys and girls team up to form a baseball team and to try and get a rocket back. And yes get it back from behind the fence and a dog, not the same dog of course but still another dog. I’d say if you like "The Sandlot", then maybe check out this sequel or if you didn’t like "The Sandlot" check it out anyways, because these two movies are totally different except for the name.
Melanie - I don't think I have watched either of these though I know for a fact we have at least the first one on DVD lol
