Movies That Time Forgot - Day 31 - The Terminal (2004)

An Intro From Dave

A year ago I was tasked with a top secret mission. Melanie: I want a list for next July. Like the opposite of everybody else’s “Christmas in July”. Something with a “Dave spin” on it. So my mind went to work. It almost took on several different incarnations before landing here. It could have Christmas Horror. It could have been Halloween themed. Then it started as a random list of movies that got buried in the sands of time that people forgot. That's actually our specialty. But I also included a few that made money but seemed to have been forgotten since then, as I haven’t heard much about them since their release. So hop in, buckle your seatbelt, and remember to keep your hands inside the ride at all times.

Day 31 - The Terminal (2004) - Jenn

This movie I found interesting from the very beginning. I just mean the premises behind it, and add Tom Hanks. Hello! And that movie is "The Terminal". Guy can’t enter United States or go home. So he’s pretty much in limbo, which sucks but then again making the airport your home is pretty interesting. I mean I wouldn’t want to live there, but for a movie it’s interesting and I definitely say check it out.

Melanie Says -  It's almost impossible to believe that this partly based on a true story, well I guess inspired by would be more accurate. Still crazy!

Day 30 - Alice (Syfy mini series) (2009) - Dave

This is an interesting take on the Alice in Wonderland story taking place about 150 years later in a modernized and fantasized, futuristic world. Some great updates though.

Jenn Says - "Alice in Wonderland" or just "Alice" as this movie is known, is a remake or retelling of that famous story. Though this one takes a stranger turn than usual. It’s more modern day with almost punk twist, at least their version of the mad hatter looks more punk to me, and not your normal way that he usually looks. Well if you’ve seen all the original retellings of the classic tale, and you want something different for it then "Alice" is your story. It was very underrated so I'm not sure if many have actually heard of it.

Melanie Says -
Definitely one of the best adaptations out there and so full of star power. I adore Andrew Lee Potts (although I found this after I knew him from Primeval and then True Bloodthirst) and he is a fabulous Hatter! Throw in Kathy Bates and Tim Curry and really what have you got to lose?!

 Day 29 - Eurotrip (2004) - Dave

Box office flop, not even making back its budget but a fun film! Everyone needs a mindless fun movie to just chill with! This is it! And of course, if you like bonus features and commentaries, this has one of the best. The writers make a drinking game out of the movie and get plastered, order a pizza, invite the delivery guy to watch the movie with them, and one of them calls home to have his wife come and get him! Ummm, correction, TO WALK THERE to drive him home, since he took the car.

Jenn Says - Eurotrip is kind of a sequel. well sort of but I like this one better than "Road Trip" anyways. After graduation Scotty finds out that his girlfriend has been cheating on him, and through a song no less. Then thinking a girl he was talking to online is actually a guy, he tells her off but then realizes his mistake. so grabbing his friends, he takes a European road trip to find this girl and explain everything. Craziness ensues and he travels from one side of Europe to the other. Does he find the girl, and explain his mistake, well? You know me so all I’ll say is go watch and you definitely can watch this without seeing "Road Trip".

Melanie Says - This is definitely a movie about stereotypes. I often wonder if this is kinda how America tourists see Europe? I will say there are definitely some things in this movie that definitely do happen lol (yup some countries are CRAZY)! Overall these type of movies are not my thing BUT I do get a kick out of this particular one.

Day 27 - Secondhand Lions (2003)  - Jenn

This movie is a bit older that even I almost forgot about it. I’m not sure honestly if many people have heard of it but this feel good movie is definitely not one to be missed, and that’s "Secondhand lions". From the title, you might be thinking --what? But trust me this sweet movie might just be what you need if feeling down. This is about a boy who goes to stay with his rich uncles, and ends up having the family he always wanted, if his no good mom doesn’t come back and ruin everything. He also ends up teaching his uncles that maybe having him around isn’t so bad either.

Melanie Says -  This reminds me of the old Disney movies like Candleshoe.  If you haven't seen it you really should (although Michael Cane's accent takes a bit of getting used to lol).  There are actually a lot of big names to look out for, some in young appearances but half the fun there is spotting them (or not if you are me - I just wait for Greg to tell me after guessing wrong a bunch of times).

Day 25 - Stan Helsing (2009) - Dave

Calling this a horror film would be so wrong. Its a straight up spoof. You can gather that much from the title itself. A descendant of the legendary Van Helsing, Stan leads this parody of the horror genre as he encounters spoofed versions of Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers, etc. If you want horror, look elsewhere. If you miss the "Scary Movie" franchise, this is the movie for you.

Melanie Says -  Hmmm I was tempted by the title but I can't stand the Scary Movie Franchise - I bet Em and Greg would like this though!

Day 25 - The Watch (2012)  - Jenn

This movie title may make you go WHAT?, but trust me it’s actually interesting. "The Watch" is about a group of friends who live close to each other and form none other than a neighborhood watch. But seeing something weird one night, they decide to investigate. When they do, they find something that they definitely don’t expect to find, and they also realize that maybe one member of the group is not who they really say they are. What does this group find out? I forgot, so go watch it for yourselves :)

Day 24 - Dead Again (1991)  - Dave

Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Robin Williams. Williams has a little more than a cameo in this film but overall, his performance and delivery of some of the dialog steals the show. A bit of a thriller about a woman with memory loss but is retaining flashes of a past life where she was murdered. Excellent work. Part noir, part thriller, part murder mystery, all entertainment.

Melanie Says -  I remember watching this in the movie theatre and thinking it was just totally inspired. Definitely a movie that is seriously underrated and I agree Dave, although Robin Williams part is small - it is one of the things I remember the most clearly!

Day 23 - A League Of Their Own (1995)  - Jenn

This movie is a great reminder that women can do anything they set their mind to. Even play softball in a actual league when all the men have gone to war. "A League of Their Own" is about two sisters who love softball. Though one is better at it then the other. A scout seeing their games asks them, well the older sister anyways, if she’d be interesting in joining or auditioning for a pro league. Turning it down, it’s actually her sister that ends up talking her into it, not wanting to be stuck in the town she’s in forever. I think some of us can relate to that. Not only does this movie show the power and heart of women. The message is phenomenal. If you have a dream and believe in it, nothing is impossible unless you give up.

Melanie Says -  I never really watched this one but I know it is loved by many. I think just because baseball really isn't a thing in England. Lots of big names in this though!

Day 22 - The Perfect Score (2004) - Dave

Typical teen comedy about stealing the SAT's for the answers so they can pass. Chris Evans and Scarlett Johannson. If it helps, you can think of as an Avengers prequel!

Melanie Says - lol @ the Avengers stuff! Oh the days when high school movies had 99% of the class that could in no way pass for high school lmao.  I never really understood the SAT stuff till I moved here - but now I get it!

Day 21 - The Hot Chick (2002)

"The Hot Chick". What can I say about it besides it’s hilarious and Rob Schneider as a girl is definitely not something you want to miss. Basically teenage highschool girl finds cursed earrings, looses one, which is then found by someone else. He puts it on and they basically switch bodies, think "Freaky Friday" but way better. So trying to figure everything out. She goes to her best friend for help, who at first doesn’t believe her and thinks she’s crazy. Yes she proves it’s her and with the help of some new friends. They try and figure out what’s going on and how she possibly could get back to normal.

Melanie Says - I am a sucker for body switch movies - I honestly don't think that there are any that I don't enjoy. Such fun!

Day 20 - Batchelor Party (1984) - Dave

Before Tom Hanks became "Oscar award winner Tom Hanks", he did some screwball comedies. This is one of them. Personally, I prefer movies like this and "Money Pit", etc over "Forrest Gump".

Melanie Says - I agree that Forest Gump is overrated in the grand scheme of things and ALWAYS comes up with Tom Hanks.  Personally I am more a fan of Big!

Day 19 - Coyote Ugly (2000) - Dave

An aspiring songwriter takes a job at a bar while waiting for her big break. Fun little film. One point of note for me-- I will always identify this movie with the Kevin Bacon film "Hollow Man" because both opened the same weekend. I wanted to see both and had to decide which to see first. Ended up seeing both that weekend instead of putting one off. Ended up liking this one more. Wasn't impressed with "Hollow Man" too much.

Jenn Says - This movie I wasn’t so sure about, but after seeing it I loved it. "Coyote Ugly" is one of those that you shouldn’t judge it before watching. Girl wants too be a song writer, but feels like she’s going nowhere starts too work at a bar where the bartenders don’t just bartend but dance as well. Does this shy girl finally come out of her shell and into her own, well maybe musers and that’s all I’ll say.

Melanie Says - I LOVE this movie! I can't even tell you how many times I have watched it. I will forever associate the Kid Rock song "Cowboy" with this movie, I wanted to dance on a bar, (I tended bar when this came out but it was NOTHING like this), I loved the side characters,  and there's a decent romance story too.  It's cheesy, fabulous, and everyone should watch it. You know they even had a reality show "The Ultimate Coyote Ugly Search" that ran for 2 seasons after this!  Oh and if you watch the cancelled Fox show "The Big Leap" also staring Piper Perabo you will see at least a great nod to this movie!

Day 18 - Wild Hogs (2007) - Jenn

I’m not a huge fan of Tim Allen or John Travolta, but I still enjoyed this movie about a group of friends, who made their own biker gang and decided to go on one last road trip and that’s "Wild Hogs". Feeling old and useless this group of friends takes one last trip on their bikes, not realizing the kind of trouble that they might get into along the way, including burning down a bar, pissing off a crazy biker gang and then possibly saving a town. Sound interesting well it was, and maybe these guys just realized as long as you still have the heart and drive to do something, then age shouldn’t really matter.

Melanie Says - I haven't seen this but it has William H Macy in it so might have to check it out for that reason alone!

Day 17 - Comic Book: The Movie (2003) - Dave

Mockumentary about a comic book fan (Mark freaking Hamill!!!!!!) battling a studio, keeping from rebooting a classic character to an updated version. A lot of great inside jokes for collectors and comic con attendees alike, including a memorable scene about actors wearing costumes, while in the background are 3 actors most known for wearing costumes (Darth Vader, Bobo Fett and Chewbacca).

Day 16 - Super 8 (2011) - Dave

For all the success this movie has had, it doesn't seem to have reached the level it deserved as the masterpiece it truly is. It should be seen a future classic but I hear very little about it nowadays. Right after the release, the talks died down like it didn't even exist. Very reminiscent of classics such as E.T., Close Encounters and The Goonies.

Melanie Says - I vaguely remember this, but I more remember the fact that like you said it just sort of went away even though it has all the right hallmarks to make it a cult classic.  Great pick Dave!

Day 15 - Sucker Punch (2011) - Dave

Huge action sequences (especially in the extended cut)! Elaborate sets! Zack Snyder brings it all he got but it couldn't bring the money to the box office. Barely making a hair over its budget, it was lost on a lot of viewers. Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Vanessa Hudgens star.

Jenn Says - Just like "Big Fish" you really can’t explain this movie but again if you like the weird and unusual, then this is another movie for you

Melanie Says - This movie is SO underrated. Female Centric with kick ass action and big names! It's a unique epic fantasy that was just too far off the norm for it to be a success. My suggestion - set your reality switch to off and just enjoy it!

Sean Astin, Wil Wheaton. Boarding school miscreants take things into their own hands when mercenaries invade their school and take them hostage.

Melanie Says - When Dave mentioned this was on the list I got really excited, but that was because I was thinking of "Small Soldiers" which this is not.  This is Wesley Crusher trying really hard not to be Wesley Crusher, and basically ending up as Wesley Crusher. (And if none of that makes sense that's OK - just google Small Soldiers and enjoy that instead).

Day 13 - Pleasantville (1998) - Dave

One part comedy, one part drama, a dash or 2 of fantasy. OK, maybe a bit more. 2 teens getting trapped in a 50's cheesy sitcom could be considered a little more than a dash of fantasy. Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon star.

Melanie Says - This is a cute movie. Back when Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon were considered big movie draws this was a little gem that sort of slipped under the radar a bit. It's funny now that there are shows (WandaVision for example) that are very clearly pulling from these influences.

Day 12 - Big Fish (2003) - Dave

One of the lesser talked about Tim Burton projects. This one stars Ewan McGregor, Helena Bonham Carter, Albert Finney, and Jessica Lange. A well made mix of fantasy, comedy, drama, often lost in the shuffle when people discuss Burton's works of art but should definitely be checked out.

Jenn Says  - If you’re looking for something totally different and out there, then this movie you should definitely check out. "Big Fish" by Tim Burton, is so that movie that honestly it cannot be explained. so my advice is if you like the strange and unusual then go check out this movie, because you definitely won’t be disappointed.

Melanie Says - This is a really good Tim Burton movie BUT it is one for me that I would only watch once. Just too many feels - but a lot of people love that!

Bill Nighy, Emily Blunt, Rupert Grint, Martin Freeman. Quick-witted black comedy sprinkles itself through this tale of a hitman and the thief he was hired to kill.

Melanie Says - Oh I think I saw this but it has been a long time. May be time for a rewatch!

Day 10 - Accepted (2006) - Dave

Justin Long, Blake Lively, Jonah Hill. Justin Long invents a fake college to impress his father but soon he gets a lot more students expecting it to be real so he makes it real with some very interesting classes.

Jenn Says - "Accepted". It has to be one of my favorite movies, even though I haven’t watched it in awhile. I should rectify that soon, but it’s basically about a group of misfits who don’t get into college. so not wanting to tell there parents that, they make up their own, with a building and everything. but what happens afterwards is the most hilarious thing. It makes you think that if you have a website online, you should really be careful with saying stuff like "acceptance is just one click away".

Melanie Says - I remember this one coming out but I am pretty sure we didn't watch it. I'll have to ask Greg lol!

Day 9 - Four Rooms (1995) - Dave

Anthology movie with 4 stories in a hotel and the adventures of a bellhop that has a rather interesting list of guests on one fateful night. Of the recognizable names, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino are 2 of the writers/directors involved.

Melanie Says - Can't I will watch pretty much anything that Quentin Tarantino puts out and when you add huge names such as Tim Roth, Antonio Banderas, Marissa Tomei, and even Madonna, just to kick things off, this is one of those movies that you can't believe wasn't a bigger hit.  It leans way more dark comedy than most other Tarantino stuff and Dave's right when he say an anthology (with all the guests sort of having their own story) although I never thought of it like that. If you haven't seen it I recommend it!

Day 7 - Without A Paddle (2004) - Jenn

"Without a Paddle" is one of the funniest movies I’ve seen. It’s about these four friends from childhood talking about going on a huge adventure. But as life goes three out of four can’t go. that is until they lose their friend that was planning the trip. Finding his stuff about this treasure hunt of a trip the three remaining friends decide to go. You know it can’t be that easy though right, and it’s definitely not. so if you haven’t seen "without a paddle", then I definitely suggest you check this one out.

Dave Says- Matthew Lillard, Dax Shepard, Seth Green, Ethan Supplee. With talent like this, what can go wrong? Well, its a comedy so basically everything. But this gem slipped through alot of cracks and went undiscovered by the masses. That is, until we feature it here for you.

Melanie Says - Can't believe I have never even heard of this movie lol! Definitely adding it to my list.

Day 7 - V For Vendetta (2005) - Jenn

This is another movie I saw after it had been out for along time. And honestly that was because I wasn’t really sure if it was a movie that I’d like, but boy was I wrong and that is "V for Vendetta". The concept is actually really interesting, or scary. Let’s just go with scary because basically it’s about a society that’s completely controlled by the government, you do exactly what they say. They run your life, and yes that includes curfews. If you don’t go by there rules, they basically take you, and believe me that’s definitely not something that you want. Girl doesn’t abide by the curfew and goes out, gets in trouble, but gets saved by this masked avenger, literally. You never see his face through the whole movie. This guy is basically trying to take down the whole government with help of course. Once she realizes that maybe he’s not so crazy. Does he succeed, well I'm sure some of you have seen it, because it’s become quite a cult classic and if not you just have to watch for yourself and find out. Also if you’ve ever heard the saying "remember remember the fifth of November", this movie is where that comes from. Also from real events but we'll just stick with the movie..

Dave Says - I remember hearing about the making of this movie and that Natalie Portman shaved her head for it. That wasn't enough to bring me to watch it though, until I actually saw the trailer.

Melanie Says - OK I am 99.9% sure I must have see this. We have the mask, actually I think we might have 2 lol. It's basically a version of a play on Guy Fawkes Night (5th November), and it has a plethora of famous people in it. And yet ...... I think I need to watch it again because it isn't quite clicking.
