Can you believe this is the 4th year of 31 Days of Halloween? This year I am taking the reins with some help from Susan Harris. Things might look a little different but I guarantee one thing - Lots of "different" Halloween options! Day 31 -Melanie Says - I have quite the fascination with Spirit Photography and this movie (a remake of the Japanese version with the same name from 4 years earlier) really does a good job of keeping the original lore - but making it accessible to a more American audience. Camera's and their connection to the soul is something that is very prevalent in other cultures, but pretty overlooked for the most part (I feel) here. With so many actual spirit photos out there it definitely poses some interesting questions. This version stars Joshua Jackson who I am not generally a fan of but he does a good job in this movie, helped along by some amazing music by Nathan Barr (who seems to compose things for a lot of the movies I enjoy). The idea is heavily based in actual Japanese lore which to me makes it far more interesting than your average horror movie. Relying more on the creep factor, than gore with a rating of only PG 13, for me this hits better than many that sit with the R rating. Streaming Availability - The only free version I could find was with a Starz subscription but it is available to rent almost everywhere. Have you seen it? What did you think? Will you be watching it?

Day 30 - The Killing Of A Sacred Deer (2017)Susan Says - Steven Murphy, a surgeon, takes an awkward teenage boy, Martin, under his wing. But things get worse for the Murphys when they find out that Martin has a sinister agenda of his own. The cast was what drew me to this film, not due to big names like Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell, but finding out the Barry Keoghan was starring in it. Barry has recently started to get global attention for his acting, and it's rightly deserved. (But I know him as the young fella in LOVE/HATE whose one scene in an episode had 41 complaints. LOL) This one is defo worth a watch if you want a twisty plot line! Melanie Says - OMG - I didn't know the name Barry Keoghan but I know the EXACT Love/Hate scene you are talking about! Poor lad will probably never live that down. This is definitely going on the to be watched list! Day 29 - Ghost Ship (2002)Melanie Says - Ugh I debated removing this one and replacing it with one that I could find streaming but I couldn't find a good one to replace it and ran out of time - so here is is. I think this is one of the most underrated horror movies from the 2000s. Even if you don't watch to watch the whole thing (because the rent part - I get it) - if you love horror movies the beginning of this one is one you will never forget. I will say it is quite graphic, and hits totally unexpected. In fact when the movie started playing when we first watched it I wasn't even sure we had the right one playing but nope, right before that 5 minute mark it hits you. With an opening like that you would expect it to lean more into the graphic horror, but instead you get a sophisticated ghost story with awesome effects and a great soundtrack. Streaming Availability - I was only able to find sites where you can rent (Pretty much all of them had it) - and it "might" be streaming with AMC+ but I don't have it so couldn't check for sure. Day 28 - Oculus (2013)Melanie Says - I am pretty sure that now most people know Karen Gillan from one thing or another, but when this movie first aired unless you were a Whovian you probably hadn't seen her. I was worried that she would forever be Amy Pond but then after watching this I knew she was going to be a global success - and she has been. I do love a good play on a mirror story, especially a spooky one, and this is exactly what this movie gives you but with some twists. Based on a short story it really doesn't feel like they added filler to make this movie length but logic dictates they must have. Although I know that the movie was pretty successful when it released, I feel like it isn't really talked about and that's a shame. It really has a dark elegance to it, and I have to say I am particularly glad that they have never attempted any kind of sequel (or prequel), even though the dual timeline perspective probably could have been exploited. I'm not a fan of clowns, so this one of probably not going to get watched even if I did snort laughing at how the clown died in the trailer. Ross Noble wouldn't be a comedian that I would watch in stand up so I doubt he would be any better in a movie! Melanie Says - OK I think I might have seen this one a while back. Killer clown movies are always fun and I think we watched this after AHS Freak Show because the whole you almost feel bad for the killer clown because the kids are such assholes aspect felt familiar. Day 26 - Vampire Journals (1997)Melanie Says - Yes, yes, another vampire movie. I mean I am sure most of you aren't ACTUALLY surprised. This gem is from 1997 and mainly caught my attention originally because it has Johnathon Morris in it. Now that probably won't mean much to many Americans (or to Susan who is just too young apparently), but he was in a TV show called Bread that focused on a family in Liverpool. This movie has nothing to do with that though, dealing with a vampire with a soul who sets out to destroy all the vampires, especially those from his Sire's line. The whole vampire with a soul thing is not new, but this movie is often forgotten when people talk about them with it not really having huge names to bolster the search criteria. (I mean Johnathon Morris lol - that says it all). With that being said, if you haven't seen it it is definitely one I would recommend watching at least once. It IS the typical 90s style of taking itself far too seriously for the resulting movie, but I think that just adds to its charms, and it's available to watch for free right now. Day 25 - The Devil's Violinist (2013)Melanie Says - OK I will admit I might be stretching things including this. but hey my list my rules lol. I discovered this movie after hearing a David Garrett performance. He is an extremely talented violinist and I LOVE that they used an actual violin player in this movie rather than finding an actor that could pass it off. The Devil's Violinist is based on another actual violinist from the 1800's Niccolò Paganini. His violin abilities were so good that it was widely believed that he must had made some sort of Faustian Devil's deal. In the movie David plays Niccolò and knowing he is actually playing the violin is captivating. His acting isn't bad, in fact it is better than many of the leading men that land roles, but the fact that this is his only film, sticking with his real talent is probably the best plan. The movie itself takes a few creative liberties with the real life version of events, and much like The Libertine, show us how a life of excess has its downfalls. So yes, it might be a stretch to have this is a horror movie, but watch it anyway! In this the violinist reminds me greatly of Nicki (the vampire violinist from The Vampire Chronicles). If they ever get round to doing some kind of faithful adaptation he would have been perfect. (Well he would have been perfect 10 years ago - now probably not so much). Day 24 - The Hole In The Ground (2019)Susan Says - Look Greg! It's the Irish countryside with green grass and trees and a massive sinkhole! LOL The plot of the movie centers around Sarah, who moves to the Irish countryside after Sarah leaves her husband and rents a house near a forest where she settles with her son, Christopher. Things take a turn when she meets Noreen who informs her that Christopher is not her actual son. One night, Sarah's young son disappears into the woods behind their rural home. When he returns, he looks the same, but his behavior grows increasingly disturbing. Sarah begins to believe that the boy who returned may not be her son at all. As someone who drives around Ireland a lot and who's sat nav tends to bring her into forests for no reason, even I wasn't disturbed by creepy child... It's an alright movie, considering it's Irish so might be worth a watch. Melanie Says - I haven't seen it but it definitely looks like the sort of thing I would like. Adding it to my list! Originally released as a SyFy original movie, I watched this right when it aired. I even have the original Get Glue sticker for it. I will confess I was curious to see what Andrew Lee Potts would do in a movie, and he pretty much plays the same sort of character as he did in Primeval - so make of that what you will. This movie breaks all the rules of which I am so fond, and yet I find that I love it. Perhaps because it genuinely takes itself so seriously, in a movie that is literally ANYTHING other than a serious take on the vampire genre. Day 22 - Black Sunday (1960)Melanie Says - I'm swapping in this one that we just watched from Greg's list as the other one I had isn't available anywhere so that was annoying. I have to say I can't believe this was a 1960s movie! Although it's black and white and hits all the cheesy notes you would want in a classic, the story is unusual (it talks in the description about a witch - but she is a witch/vampire), that comes back to curse her family (which seemed strange until you find out her brother was the one that had her killed in the first place). I would literally sit this up there with any of the black and white classics and I have to say, as I said to Greg on more than one occasion - her eyeliner was fabulous. I mean this look was probably achieved with some substance that is now banned because it's likely to kill you - but still - you can't argue with the result. If you like classics, you should check this out. I can't believe I never heard of it before! **Note to add - Apparently, this was released originally in Italian with this name and then dubbed for an English version released as "The Mask of Satan". A cure was later discovered, and 75% of those infected who could be captured have been treated and cured of the virus. The remaining 25% have proven resistant to the cure. The two groups are known as the Cured and the Resistant. The Resistant are held in captivity, despite public fears that keeping them alive could lead to another outbreak. The Cured is an Irish horror movie that gives a new twist on the zombie genre, and has a stellar cast of Irish and international stars. I love anything that Tom Vaughan-Lawlor is in because he is one of the mist underrated Irish actors...well, we Irish know he's brilliant, but the world needs to know too! (See Love/Hate) There is drama, suspense, and compelling characters that proves that you don't need a big blockbuster to have a great zombie movie... Day 20 - Vampire Killers (2009)Melanie Says - This was another one of those Blockbuster clearout finds and we picked it up despite the fact it had James Cordon in it who I honestly can't stand in anything. I have since found out that he has publicly disowned this movie and says noone should watch it ever, and that made me actually like it even more. This is a ridiculous movie, that apparently was released under the name "Lesbian Vampire Killers" so when I was looking it up it took me a little while. My case has the same picture as most of the movie posters out there but with just "Vampire Killers" which is probably sufficient. From what I understand, the idea was to make a typical B style movie in the style of the old Hammer Horror features. Well they managed the B part outstandingly, so kudos for that. The trailer gives you a good idea as to how bad this movie is - but yes - it is one that skews into the but it's so bad I like it column. And especially as James doesn't want anyone watching it, and he regrets making it, I figure the more people that know and talk about it the better. Right? Susan Says - This looks terrible, and no, not just because Mel sort of likes it, but because James Cordon is in it and he is an awful actor and a bad comedian ... think I'll swerve this LOL Streaming Availability - I could not find a free option anywhere. This is everything I want in my classic horror movies. 100% huge cheese factor and some of the scenes are just so hilarious it's ridiculous. The premise revolves around a biker gang, but their leader is special - even more special than he realizes although he knows he can come back from the dead. In fact they can all come back from the dead if they just BELIEVE enough. There are a plethora of well known British actors in here that most Americans will probably not recognize but don't let that stop you. If nothing else watch for the leader's "Funeral" - Absolutely classic! I loved this so much that I immediately ordered the remastered BluRay version because I feel the need to have this on my shelves, but you can watch for free in several places including YouTube. Day 18 - Blood The Last Vampire (2009)Susan Says - Blood: The Last Vampire, is the live action version of the anime of the same name. The story centers around Saya is a 400-year-old half human-half vampire who hunts vampires. Saya was raised by a man named Kato, she works loosely with an organization known as "The Council", a secret society that has been hunting vampires for centuries. (Cough, Cough...sound familiar folks?) Saya's motivation goes beyond duty; she wants revenge: Onigen, the oldest of the vampires, murdered her father.
I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this movie, the martial arts and the almost noir-esque feel to the entire movie. It got unfairly mixed reviews because it kept being compared to the anime but if you are looking for something different watch, then you really should check out Blood :The Last Vampire! (Additional note: I've just realized that there are a lot of movies on this list by me that star Liam Cunningham, but since he's Irish, I have to offer my support) Melanie Says - I had heard of the anime one but not the live action. Day 17 - Embrace of the Vampire (1995)Melanie Says - I originally watched this because Martin Kemp plays a vampire. Whilst not a big name in the States, in the UK he was one of the 2 brothers that were in the New Wave band Spandau Ballet, and then he went on to star in Eastenders, and my favorite version of The Krays. Then, when I moved here, we watched it again because Greg had a thing for Alyssa Milano until he followed her on Twitter and that put an end to that. As vampire movies go, this one follows a pretty standard trope, but worth watching for the cast. Other than the ones already mentioned there will probably a few that pop up that you recognize. Day 16 - Last Kind Words (2012)Melanie Says - This was another one of those movies we grabbed when Blockbusters was closing down, mainly because it starred Brad Dourif who is probably best known for voicing Chucky in the Child's Play franchise. The movie itself has what I call the "Southern Creep Factor" which can generally be applied to anything set in the middle of nowhere in the south, normally on some sort of farm or plantation, and you know that at least one of the characters is going to be a ghost. If you watch enough of these movies, and I probably have, there are some plot points that are pretty obvious form the get go, but as I guess the plotline to a lot of horror movies I don't class that as necessarily a bad thing. Several popular tropes all crossover making this a decent watch if you haven't seen it and like creepy southern style horror. Definitely improved by the fact that Brad Dourif plays an excellent bad guy, and that it is available to watch for free right now. Aa police officer who has recently been transferred to a small town, arrests a drunk driver for hitting a man with his car. Bringing the unknown man back to the police station for questioning., she has no idea what's in store for those in the police station. Day 14 - Dead Ringers (1988)Melanie Says - So today's movie might be slightly familiar to those that have been around for a while, as I did cover it for my first ever Forgotten Feature Friday back in 2021. I have even included the YouTube video for that along with the trailer. Dead Ringers is a very dark David Cronenberg movie that stars Jeremy Irons as twin gynecologists whole literally share everything, including some disturbing obsessions. I was expecting to see this popping up a bit more as Amazon recently did a remake as a series with a gender bend twist (which I will be honest, I haven't watched, although it is floating around on a to watch at some point list), but I don't think anyone could compare to Jeremy's portrayal of the twins. As I mention in my forgotten feature segment, this movie features some amazing filming techniques that add so much to the performance. It is almost impossible to tell that it is one person playing the 2 parts, which considering this was 1988, was amazing. The only other time I have been as impressed is when the "twins" were in the TV show The Following. That was spectacularly done too. With such an unusual topic for a horror movie, and adding in the fact that it was at least based in part on a true story, if you can handle medical type horror, you should definitely check this out. Warlock is definitely my favorite of all Julian's roles. I love that his character is so totally unapologetic with regard to what he is doing, and that he will do whatever it takes to make it happen. This movie is full of stars, including Richard E Grant and Lori Singer, and even though some of the scenes (*cough the airport cough*) are place this movie 100% in the 80s, I rewatched it a couple of weeks ago, and for me the story idea holds up so well. Day 12 - Boys From County Hell (2020)Susan Says - I stumbled upon this movie when I was doing research for Own The Night, because I was looking at Irish vampire lore and to be fair, it looked hilarious. I'm planning on watching it once I have a few hours to spare cause I can justify it as research. The movie centers around a crew of hardy road workers, led by a bickering father and son, must survive the night when they accidentally awaken an ancient Irish vampire. I'm not sure that the legend of The Abhartach was ever meant to be used in such a silly way...but there ya go... This one is defo a must watch! Melanie Says - So as I was watching the trailer Greg heard and then we decided to watch it. I will say the comedy in it is very dark and it is SUPER Irish - there were times I really needed the subtitles and I lived with Susan and never had an issue lol. (I will also say there are times when the subtitles are just totally wrong and quite obviously added by an American but I was able to figure it out). This almost has the feel of the older movies like American Werewolf in London. Obviously not a high budget production with use being made of whatever they had around them, but it worked! The father and son dynamic was hilarious - there is one line, which I won't spoil for you, that had me laughing ridiculously because it was just SO perfect, but so not what you would ever get in a normal horror movie. This year I am taking the reins with some help from Susan Harris. Things might look a little different but I guarantee one thing - Lots of "different" Halloween options! Day 11 - 6 Souls (2013) Melanie Says - 6 Souls was originally released everywhere else in the world as "Shelter" in 2010 but for whatever reason when it released in the US 3 years later they renamed it 6 Souls, which, in my opinion is actually a better name for it. What starts off appearing to be an intriguing case of multiple personality disorder soon dissolves into something far darker and supernatural. I am a fan of Jonathan Rhys Meyers in general, and will pretty much watch anything with him in, but I will say this is probably one of his best, but most underrated performances ever. Pretty much hated upon by critics, who I have already decided generally know nothing about what makes a good movie, this one is 100% worth the watch, and not in the way that yesterday's "it's so bad I love it" one was. This has a fabulously dark story with a twist ending that I never saw coming (which always get bonus points). It relies heavily on the psychological aspect of horror for the most part, with just a few physical elements making it so that when they hit they are more impactful. If you are looking for dark and twisty and not so much gore - this is the one for you. Streaming Availability - Available To Watch Free With TUBI at the time of posting. WATCH HERE Have you seen it? Day 10 - Blood For Dracula (1974)Melanie Says - And now for something totally different. There are a lot of vampire movies out there, especially Dracula movies, but this one has a special place in my heart because it is just SO SO badly filmed and edited - that it actually makes it good. Think about the lowest budget special effects that you could find (need a person to look green - no problem - hold a green light near their face), some of the most over the top acting (if you have seen the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie - the overacting in this tops Paul Reubens death scene), and of course there's the fact that the only thing that can save you from Dracula is not being a virgin! Add to that ridiculous accents that make no sense, some questionable choices with a skeevy gardener (I can save you - just have sex with me), and you might be asking why you should watch this. I honestly can't tell you why other than I love it. I think Udo Kier is fabulous. I can totally see why they chose him to play Dracula, he has cheekbones to die for. Sometimes you just need a total B movie experience to escape the total ridiculousness of the world today - plus there is a cameo from Roman Polanski - so be sure to watch for that (if you decide to watch). At the moment you can check it out for free - so live on the edge - take a chance! We did tell you this year's list would offer some unusual suggestions. Susan Says - This sounds like a terrible movie - so of course Mel likes it LOL Streaming Availability - Available To Watch Free With TUBI at the time of posting. (They have it listed as "Andy Warhol's Young Dracula" but it is the same movie) WATCH HERE Have you seen it? What did you think? Will you be watching it?

This year I am taking the reins with some help from Susan Harris. Things might look a little different but I guarantee one thing - Lots of "different" Halloween options! Day 9 - Byzantium (2012)Susan Says - Neil Jordan has directed some of the most unique and original films in history, like Intermission, The Butcher Boy, a fave of mine, Michael Collins, Breakfast on Pluto, and of course Interview with the Vampire. To be honest I had never heard of Byzantium until we were coming up with the list and was surprised at the caliber of the cast in the movie. I do love a good flashback, so I appreciated the look back at Clara's past. I enjoyed the cinematic aspects of it, the glimpses of beauty in a world driven by blood, in the willingness to die and become a vampire rather than die a mortal death. If you like unusual takes on the vampire genre, then you really need to give Byzantium a go! Melanie Says - I do love an unusual vampire story, and that is exactly what this is. Unique, tragic, and very unlike most of the stories out there. Although there are some larger names attached to the project (For example Neil Jordan who also directed Interview with the Vampire), I think for the most part this movie sits lost in the shadows. Split between moments of quiet beauty and despair, and then the required death that always comes with vampire movies, paired with a mix between historic flashbacks and current day events, I feel that this movie didn't ever really find the right market. That doesn't stop it from being one that I adore though, or from being one I highly recommend. Streaming Availability - Available To Watch Free With TUBI at the time of posting. Day 8 - Fresh (2022)Melanie Says - Last year Sebastian Stan seemed to be all over Hulu, from Pam and Tommy, to this Huluween Original movie. As with David Tennant, Sebastian Stan plays a great bad guy. Leaning into well known killers that seemed charming, and maybe a little too good to be true (Ted Bundy), Sebastian Stan's character starts off as what appears to be a breath of fresh air in a very stale, absolutely horrific, dating game. From the trailer it is apparent that he is definitely not one of the good guys, and as Noa's friend quickly works out - no social media? RED FLAG! Although even she probably had no idea what the final plans were. This is a very dark comedy, I mean I am not 100% sure it is meant to be funny, but I certainly laughed ... A LOT .. and so did Greg. If your humor skews off kilter then definitely check this out. I mean if you had ever thought meeting someone in person was safer than in an app? This will totally make you think again. Susan Says - I think this will be one of those movies that I can't watch because to me, Sebastian Stan will always be Bucky Barnes, just like when I started to watch Jeremy Renner in Dahmer and had to turn it off because I was as traumatized as I was when Mel made me watch the Ted Lasso cartoon Christmas episode and had to witness Roy Kent without his eyebrows! Melanie Says - Not even a little bit sorry lol Had to be done! Streaming Availability - Available To Watch Free With Hulu at the time of posting. Day 7 - Monster Party (2018) Melanie Says - This is another one of those random movies we acquired, but this time it was from the Dollar Tree. With a description of 3 small town crooks who pose as caterers for a rich house having a dinner party .... except the dinner party is in fact code for a support meeting for "recovering serial killers", how could I resist? I was surprised to see some pretty big names in a movie that barely made it to theaters, Sam Strike, Erin Moriarty, Robin Tunney, Bill Engvall, Julian McMahon, and Lance Reddick, although even they struggled in parts. The idea is a great one, and I loved how dark the themes were with some inspiration obviously being taken from big cases like the Menendez Brothers, and I always appreciate a little irony in my movies, but this fell into the hole of not quite being campy enough to be bad good (although some of the special effects - REALLY LAUGHABLE), and not serious enough to build any kind of tension (well for me - I am sure some people would feel differently). Overall I would probably rate it about a 7 - worth watching for free if you happen to like any of the cast - which I do, and it comes in at my magic 90 minute mark (which followers of the page know that's my IDEAL movie length).
