Susan - Susan Harris is a writer from Cork, Ireland and when she’s not torturing her readers with heart-wrenching plot twists or killer cliffhangers, she’s probably getting some new book related ink, binging her latest TV or music obsession, or with her nose in a book. She is a proud founding Member of the Muser VIPers and is responsible for Melanie not breaking the Website on an almost daily basis! |
I'll start with Tom as Alfie Solomons in Peaky Blinders. It takes a rare talent for someone to come into an already established show with a sublime cast of actors and steal the entire show! From the moment Alfie appeared on screen, with his short fuse and hilarious one liners, he quickly became one of my fave characters in any TV show. It's still hard to believe that Alfie is only in 13 episodes of Peaky Blinders!!! The dynamic between Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby, and Tom's Alfie just adds so much value to the show, but to be fair, I would 100% be up for an Alfie spin off where it's just Alfie, doing Alfie things in London... Melanie - Ummmm just make sure you put the subtitles on ... omg even I had a hard time with this accent! |
The Take is a four-part British television crime drama series, adapted from the novel by Martina Cole, that first broadcast on Sky1 in 2009. The Take follows the activities of criminal sociopath Freddie Jackson , who has recently been released from prison, only to find that his cousin Jimmy is attempting to make a name for himself on the back of his reputation. This was my introduction to Tom, and I was captivated even then. I remember thinking that Tom had the potential to be a massive star, even then. |
Bronson has got to to be one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. The film follows the life of this prisoner, considered Britain's most violent criminal, who has been responsible for a dozen or so cases of hostage taking while incarcerated. He was given the name Charles Bronson by his fight promoter, for his bare-knuckle fighting years. Hardy's portrayal of Bronson is one of my favorite's. I laughed so hard watching this and as Bronson tended to do, some of the movie is essential just Tom naked doing crazy shit. It might have been a daunting prospect to take on the role, knowing that Bronson might one day watch it, but despite being opposed to Tom's casting at the start, but after a few phone calls, Bronson gave Tom his seal of approval, and even stated that he believes Hardy was the only person who could play him. |
Lawless was not a great movie. Shia LeBeouf was awful. The pace of the movie was a little flat. But Tom Hardy was hilariously brilliant in this for a character who barely spoke, wore a cardigan and a hat, and just grunted. I'm pretty sure one of the main reasons I love Roy Kent from Ted Lasso so much is that he reminded me of Forest in Lawless! LOL Now, if someone could just get Tom and Brett Goldstein together in a movie, where they play two grumpy bastards, I would very much appreciate it. |
Legend is a 2015 biographical crime thriller film and is adapted from John Pearson's book The Profession of Violence: The Rise and Fall of the Kray Twins, which deals with their career and the relationship that bound them together, and follows their gruesome career to life imprisonment in 1969 Tom plays both twins in Legend, and he seamlessly was able to give a accurate portrayal of Reggie, who was able to hide his volatile nature to an extent, and Ronnie, his paranoid schizophrenic twin. I mean, I was sold on this when I heard it was about the Kray twins, but finding out that it would mean twice as much Tom Hardy in it, I was sold! Plus I do love Tom in a very nice suit... Melanie - OK I will give you this one - it is an excellent movies. I mean I don't like the way they did the narrative but Tom's performances were fabulous. I still prefer the Kemp bothers Krays though. |
Warrior is a gritty film about family, brotherhood, and how fighting for different causes can bring two brothers back together. The storytelling in Warrior, is profound, and full of heart. You can see how both the brothers have been affected by their upbringing, and by the things life has thrown at them. Tommy and Brendan are both complex on their own, and Tom's pre-production preparation that meant he went through a demanding training routine for gaining muscle, gaining around 28 pounds (13 kg) of muscle. This was also something he would do for The Dark Knight Rises and shows how far Tom is willing to go to realistically portray his characters. |
Melanie - As a note on Taboo season 2 (which was renewed back in 2017 when it first aired is actually still happening. There were talks before the strikes that they were hoping to coordinate schedules to film this year but that is delayed again).
Now, to the fun stuff!
Somewhere out there, two brilliant marketing geniuses earned a hell of a lot of money when they pitched the idea of having Tom Hardy in TV Adverts. As as staunch anti-Apple product person, I have never, ever wanted an I-phone more than when Tom told me I wanted one.
And I would gladly go out and buy an Audi, if it meant that Tom Hardy came with it!

Tom is generally known to be a big softy. He loves dogs, and he loves children. He loves children so much that he agreed to take part in a children's TV channel promotion where Celebs read bedtime stories...Tom's stories were so popular with mammies and those of us not mammies, that he broke the internet...ALOT!!! Even wearing some god awful cardigan's that man is just sexy AF! While a host of other stars have done a bedtime story or two, Tom's will always be my favorite, because when Tom Hardy tells me it's time to go to bed, I'm damn well gonna go! |

Melanie - Annnnd she didn't even discuss one of the few I actually love ..... This Means War (other than a quick mention) ! But you can google a trailer for that at this point. If anyone watches all of those you will be helping keep the BBC in revenue another year I'm sure!

The Summer Palace: A Midlife Fairy Tale Book 2 - A Release Day Spoiler Free Review From Melanie
7/14/2023
Basic Info
Standalone or series?
Book 2 in the Midlife Fairy Tale Series (CANNOT BE READ AS A STAND ALONE)
Category
Paranormal Women's Fiction
Official Blurb About The Book (From the Amazon Page)
Newly crowned queen of the Radiant fae, Sparrow “Ro” Meadowcroft has two goals. First, to show her fae subjects that despite growing up in the mortal realm, she plans to honor the customs and practices of her new world. Second, to reunite the Radiant fae with the Grym fae. Or at least broker peace between the two estranged kingdoms.
How? By returning to the Summer Palace, an old tradition that once brought both kingdoms and their rulers together for a time of relaxation and fellowship. She’s invited the ruler of the Grym, too: Queen Anyka
Ro hopes the neutral ground of Willow Hall will provide a fresh start and a chance at diplomacy, but the old palace holds dark secrets that could mean the end of the Radiant fae. Or a new day for the Grym.
Can Ro win Anyka over or has too much blood already been spilled? And why does Willow Hall seem like the start of more trouble? All Ro knows for sure is that magic abounds in the Summer Palace. And not all of it’s good.
How did I get this book?
PA Perks lol
Why did I choose to read this book: I read EVERYTHING Kristen releases!
And Now To The Review!
First Impressions:
This book pretty much picks up right where book one ended, with very little having happened which I always appreciate.
General Review
Carrying on the dual perspective with input from our main protagonist Queen Sparrow, and the antagonist Queen Anyka of the other half of the other half of the Kingdom, the narrative leans heavily towards Sparrow's story but the insights from the other Queen allow information that is really useful to the story, even if I still got blindsided by a few things (which is always fun - I do like a good jaw dropping moment). There is a little romance, but the story definitely leans more towards the mystery solving angle.
Final Thoughts
Book 2 by no means wraps everything up, but as with the first one, the story is complete enough that you don't feel the need to throw your kindle at the all in frustration while frantically looking for book 3, although that being said I definitely can't wait for book 3!
Rating
An Easy 5 stars from me and definitely Melanie's Muses Approved!

If you've been reading our Must Read Authors features that have been posted throughout June, then you already know I'm a massive Ilona Andrews fan and the Kate Daniel's world.
|
Blurb About The Book
A new town, new friends, new challenges…. And a new heart-stopping adventure from #1 New York Times bestselling author, Ilona Andrews. Kate, Curran, and Conlan may have left Atlanta for Wilmington, but the usual magic mayhem has also hitched a ride! Kate and Curran have just settled into their new home and their 'low profile,' when a local businessman approaches them with an offer they can’t refuse. A mysterious evil has spawned in the nearby forest and is holding a defenseless town hostage. The ‘due date’ is rapidly approaching. It’s exactly the kind of fight the Lennarts can’t resist, not for the prize the town offers, but for the people who will surely die if they ignore it. If they succeed, they’ll be rescuing an entire community and can build a strong new base for their family and the Wilmington Pack. If they fail...well, fail is a four-letter word. Nothing comes without a price. Now Kate must decide if she has what it takes to pay it. |
Now For The Review

Part of the Kate Daniels World - Needs to be read in order!!!!
How did I get this book?
Sent by publisher to Mel as we've read and reviewed The Hidden Legacy series before.
Why did I choose to read this book:
See opening paragraph! LOL
Genre
Urban Fantasy
And Now To The Review!
First Impressions:
It was so easy to slip back into the Kate Daniels world, and I was absorbed in the story from the moment I turned the first page - or at least flipped the kindle book!
General Review
Magic Claims picks up shortly after the end of book 1, taking us back into Kate and Curran during their Wilmington years. I loved jumping back into this world, in a new location, but the same problems as Kate and Curran, and now Conlan, seem to draw to them no matter how normal they would like life to be. But when you are the daughter of God and your husband was the Beast Lord of the pack, normal isn't quite on the table, is it?
There are a lot of things that Kate comes to realize in this book, vital things, and it sets the series wide open for interaction with old friends...and family that has been distant - BUT no spoilers so let's just say that I'd expect a crossover or two in the next book...whenever that might come out.
One of my fave things is the interactions between Curran and Conlan, and Kate and Conlan, and how they both have vital roles to play in Conlan's story.
Final Thoughts
A must-read for fans of the series, or new readers once they've gotten caught up.

Welcome to Win It Wednesday! This week's Win it Wednesday is back to more of the regular format and because we were talking about the new Fright Night version on Sunday - Melanie decided to roll with that this week! Melanie - Founder of Melanie's Muses - You should know who I am lol If not click - All about Melanie!
You can't really go wrong if you are looking to watch a version of Fright Night. The 80's version is an absolute classic that Greg and I throw lines from on a fairly regular basis. OK 2 lines - "You're So Cool Brewster", and "You Have To Have Faith". But today I am going to switch gears and talk about that evil R word - the remake!
Fright Night is one of those very few movies that ACTUALLY did the remake RIGHT! I will admit - having David Tennant prancing about in leather, dressed as a Cris Angel wannabe DID mean that I was at least going to watch it for that, although we generally do TRY and give remakes a chance, even if only so that we can slate it with properly reasoned arguments.
That being said this was actually a really GOOD remake. There were GOOD changes made but you could clearly see references to the original (such ad the apple). They updated to make it more relevant, which almost 20 years later was needed, whilst still playing a good homage to the original. They even had a cameo from Chris Saranden himself although you would REALLY need to know the original to catch it!
This movie is proof that a remake CAN be worth it. My ONLY real complaint? In the original there is this fabulous night club scene with Amy and Jerry which the remake totally skimped on. They had them in a bar/club situation, there were other people dancing, and this is SUCH an iconic scene to me that I would have loved to have seen what Colin Farrell would have done with it.
Trailers to both versions - the 1985 original and the 2011 remake (and a bonus clip of David Tennant as he is NOT in the official trailer). There are sequels to both movies - both called "Fright Night Part 2". The sequel to the 1985 version IS an actual sequel - the part 2 for the 2011 version - almost seems to be a new remake again with no real connection to anything - so just skip that lol.

Welcome to Win It Wednesday! This week's Win it Wednesday is a little different (again) as we wanted to feature Greg's Resin Creations! With the prep for FC3 well underway you can see a bit of what's happened over the last year! Make sure you scroll down for details on how to enter the giveaway too, and as always be sure to let us know what you think! |
Melanie - Should need no introduction!
It was a little over a year ago that Greg really started getting into making resin pieces. He'd made a few bits in the past, usually for particular things, but he was started to make things just to see what he could do and have some fun with it! Then, we discovered Melanie's Muses had a table at FC3 and the race was on to get some things to put on it!
That was the first mass production of bears! We gave them away as prizes, and then the Musers fell in love and they have purchased lots of them since then .... but oh how Greg's skills have improved.
That was the first mass production of bears! We gave them away as prizes, and then the Musers fell in love and they have purchased lots of them since then .... but oh how Greg's skills have improved.
Little by little the back room has become Greg's work shop. The little space in the corner has grown and we now have tables, and drawers filled with molds, key chains, and no end of weird and wonderful little things that Greg thinks might be fun to make something with at some point. Ollie also loves to help, so if you ever find cat hair in your resin - it's probably his! |
One of the biggest changes involves Melanie's Muses! The official subscribers group (Which can be found here) gets "Defects for the Rejects" offered fairly regularly (basically things Greg doesn't think are suitable for sale). They also have exclusive collectables (Like the Keys), and first dibs on things that go up for sale. There is also the regular Resin Group - Greg's Resin Creations (which can be found here), where Greg often posts things that he is working on, updates, coming soon pieces, and any other randomness he feels like. There are also giveaways so watch out for them! |
Who knows what Greg will come up with next? One of the most fun little pieces he made recently is this little pig on a swing! This was a "test run" and so it isn't getting sold ... BUT we ARE GIVING IT AWAY in the prize pack below! Can't wait to hear what you think of it! | |

Melanie - Should need no introduction!
It was a little over a year ago that Susan and I found out that we would be guests at FC32022! We had decided that we were going to do the cover reveal there for her new book instead of on our regular show, and I was going to cosplay one of the characters. I don't think either of us knew what was going to happen, but we knew we were going to have one hell of a time!
Greg was actually the person that I think understood what this meant the most. He was the one that pushed for me to have the best costume I could have (including commissioning some amazing leather pieces from Quality Leather Craft (Check out their page HERE), and insisting that as a cosplay guest I needed to stand out.
And I have never been so glad of anything as they went on to ask me to be a judge for the Cosplay Competition (something that I am also doing this year), and suddenly, my cosplay that had always just been an extra part of my page, was taking on a whole new life thanks to a convention that took a chance on someone new. (Well they actually took a chance on Susan and I came as part of the package - but I'm still counting it!)
The FC3 community is AMAZING! They welcomed us with open arms and I have been thrilled to be a representative for them at a local Halloween event, A Makers Faire (Where I also judged a cosplay makers competition), and the Yule Ball at the Rochester Museum And Science Center where Greg and I helped run the games!
You hear about conventions that are "Cliquey" or "Unfriendly" but whether you are a first timer new to the circuit, or a seasoned pro, I would challenge you to find a BETTER atmosphere than we found at FC3! It is one of the craziest, most exhausting, weekends I have ever spent ..... and I CAN'T RECOMMEND IT ENOUGH!

Now, a year later, we are getting ready for FC32023 and WE CAN'T WAIT! Check out their website HERE to see some of the things that are going to be happening. For us, I have double the costumes, a new banner, Greg has been working on a TON of resin stuff, not to mention Susan will be here with her table AND we have Musers coming to visit and help! Check out our awesome new banner - and then flick through the slideshow to see some of the fabulous pics from 2022 and be sure to scroll down to enter the giveaway! The Sicarius Security Series by Melanie - Should need no introduction! & Jenn - Jennifer Rhodes met Melanie back when True Blood was popular and they have been friends ever since. She loves TV (especially things that make you smile), Doctor Who, Finding new shows, and regularly provides awesome fandom items for Muser Giveaways. Jennifer is now a proud member of the VIPers - the Melanie's Muses Spotlight Feature Team!
Book 1 - Kiss of Death
Melanie - This is book 1 in a new series from Susan Harris and it definitely skews sexier even than the Ever Chace series. Definitely books for grown-ups! (Not that that's a bad thing!)
Kiss of Death sets up a whole new paranormal world to get lost in. From a security team that is a secret front for a group of supernatural assassins, to the misfit band of creatures that all have "interesting" skill sets. Book 1 is a great introduction to a new cast of characters that you just know will be popping up in their own stories later on. Seriously though she had me at "sexy assassin vampires" and EVEN had me laughing at a werewolf!
This book is fast-paced and comes with the almost expected now emotional drama that makes me put it in the metaphorical freezer for a time out, and yet still I turn the pages!
I am really excited to see where this series goes. I definitely already have my favorite character (Jazz), although there is probably someone for everyone in here. The cliffhanger isn't as bad as many of the Susan Harris ones out there (BURN NOTICE!!!!!!!!), but it definitely reminds you who you are reading.
*****
Jenn - I love to read. Ever since high school I've been a avid reader. I was one of those that sat in the bleachers during gym class to read. "Kiss of Death" was the first book I've read in a few years if I'm being honest.
If you're a Muser than you know have probably heard of Susan Harris or have read her books. Starting this book I instantly fell for the two main leads and wanted them together. Their chemistry is off the charts. Malakai and Keeva, vampire and banshee make the pages sizzle. Though neither is my favorite character, that belongs to Zeke. What can I say, except I just want to hug him. There's so much I could say about this book because I absolutely loved it, but I can't because SPOILERS. I read it in three days. It would have been less time if I didn't have to work. The reader is not disappointed. From the very first page it pulls you in. This book is not to be missed and I absolutely cannot wait for the next installment.

Book 2 - Leap of Faith
Melanie - Where book 1 spent time worldbuilding, book 2 is definitely more about characters and their relationships. This book focuses on a different couple to the first, and the pattern is obviously going to be a new couple for each book (with the underlying story in the background). All the characters are misfits in their own way - supernatural that whilst powerful - might not "work" in quite the way others think they are supposed to. I am a sucker for damaged characters so this definitely appeals to me - and I stand by Jazz being my favorite.
A fast paced read and a real page turner despite the (fighting) action having shifted to the lesser aspect of the story. It certainly didn't detract from wanting to see what happened at all!
There is a cliffhanger, but so far this series definitely isn't as bad as many of the Susan Harris ones out there (BURN NOTICE!!!!!!!! - I will NEVER RECOVER), but it definitely reminds you who you are reading, and I for one am glad that book 3 is already up for pre-order so the wait won't be too long.
*****
Jenn - This book I was definitely excited for because it was all about my boy Zeke, and discovering his background and what he’s been through. I was hoping that he’d finally get his happy ending, or at least close to it anyways. I can say I wasn’t disappointed in that department, because Scarlett the heroine of Zeke's story definitely deserved him in a way that made me continually keep smiling all through the book. She was there for him, and whatever he tried to do to scare her off, she wasn’t having any of it, and truthfully that’s what he needed and it worked. Scarlett tamed the monk. Now, I’m not saying this book isn’t full of surprises because it definitely is, one surprise even had me dropping my phone, so thanks for that Susan, luckily I was sitting or I might of fainted as well, but don’t worry it’s a good surprise at least I thought so. At the end of this book and you’re left on a whopper of a cliffhanger, but if you’ve read Susan’s books by now you know that’s just her. I personally can’t wait for the third book because this series has me totally enthralled, dare I say tv show anyone? because I may eventually need one!

Book 3 Visions of Destiny
Melanie - Book 3 is Jasmine's book which I was super excited for with her being my main favorite in this series. When you read the series, or if you already have, you will notice a LOT of my personality traits crossover into Jazz's character and so OF COURSE Susan decided that Jazz would fall for a werewolf. That's really not a spoiler as it is pretty evident from book 1! As Visions actually released while Susan was over here we filmed this transformation which is as close as we could get to the scene in the book. Click the picture to watch it on Facebook!
|
Jenn - These books have enthralled me from the very beginning and Visions of Destiny was no different. Now just ask Mel’s or Dave when I love something I love it deeply, but getting back to this review. If you’ve read the first two Sicarius Security books then you know how this one starts but you get a lot of answers and then BOOM with this book ending in another cliffhanger all I can say is bring on the fourth. These books of Susan’s are definitely not to be missed and they also have one of my all time favorite male characters and I don’t have many of those, so thanks for that Susan. You’re definitely one hell of a great writer, and maybe one day we can get these characters on the screen.
Book 4 - War of Hearts
Melanie - The 4th installment picks up right where the cliffhanger left you in Visions of Destiny.
This series really needs to be read in order for it to make sense, and as book 1 is free right now if you haven't started it yet, this is the perfect time to jump in.
Book 4 brings readers some of the answers to questions that have been around since the series started, but as I don't believe in spoilers in my reviews, I will just say that there was some serious plot-building involved to get to this point.
As always there is plenty of action with a healthy splattering of romance that I have come to expect from this author, that, and the dreaded cliffhanger. With one more book to come in the series the stakes are as high as ever and I can't wait to find out what happens next.
*****
Jenn - Susan Harris seems to always make me cry and War of Hearts is no exception whether it’s in a good or bad way I’ll leave that decision up to you. The Sicarius Security novels have quickly become some of my favorite, like of all time, and I’d recommend them to any reader who likes a bit of paranormal romance.
Dylan is one of those grey characters for me, but in this book with learning more stuff about him I had to change some of my earlier opinions. Does Dylan take the chance at love he’s been offered or does he throw it away, well like I always tell you, you’ll just have to read and find out. I will say that the end has me excited and ready for the final book in this series but at the same time I sad to see it end but these will definitely always be on the re read list for me.

Melanie - Should need no introduction!
Harlots is one of those rare shows that is complete at 3 seasons and has a fabulous ending. Taking place in London, this is very different from the normal period pieces with the focus being on 2 rival brothels. Yes you read that correctly! Funnily enough, despite this, there is very little actual female nudity, which isn't to say this show doesn't have its MA rating for a reason, but it's very female sex positive, and shows what women can achieve when they set their minds to it despite the trappings of their stations.
This show is packed full of star power and anyone familiar with UK TV will no doubt recognize many faces including Lesley Manville, Samantha Morton, Eloise Smyth, Jessica Brown Findlay, Bronwyn James, and watch for Bridgerton's Nicola Coughlan popping up in Season 2.
This show is excellently written, easily moving between comedy and drama, and the costuming is just fabulous. Throw in some interesting musical choices and you really have a home run. There are not many shows that are pretty much perfection from start to finish, but Harlots proves that it can be done with Season 3 finishing exactly as it should! All episodes are currently streaming on Hulu on the US, so check out the trailer below, and if you feel like a laugh my 60ish second video from 3 years ago as to why everyone should watch that I posted just before Season 3 started, and then you should go watch the show for yourself!

So being on a show drought and not being able to find anything to watch after “The Great”, I decided to do a little show rewatch. One that ended a few years ago that was unfortunately cancelled. “Siren” left me wanting more when it ended with a sort of cliffhanger. As cliffhangers go, I’ve seen worse. If you like mermaids then you need to definitely check out siren.
It’s sort of like Ariel for adults. Meaning that though mermaids and sirens look alike, they definitely have different lores. Sirens have the ability to sing, and with their song can lure men to their deaths. Don’t worry that doesn’t happen here. You meet Ryn, who’s our mermaid/siren on a hunt for her sister who was stolen by humans, and she runs into Ben and Maddie who happen to work at a rescue center for sea life.
Figuring out what Ryn is, they agree to protect and help her to recover her sister. You also meet Helen, finding out later that she might just hold a few secrets of her own. Through the series you find out that Ben, Ryn and Maddie all develop a love for each other that’s honestly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. I honestly think that was my favorite part of the show. As well as the fact that eventually you do meet other sirens, though they might not be as humanized as Ryn now is. If you like mermaids/sirens and you haven’t seen this darker take on them then you should definitely remedy that by going to Hulu and checking it out.

Sometimes when you have a show drought, you just go through streaming apps trying to find something new to watch and that’s what happened with me and how I found “The Great” on Hulu. It's a sort of history telling of Catherine the Great, and I do mean sort of because honestly I feel like none of it was historically accurate except maybe the names.
But that’s alright it was still a good story, especially season two. I stopped watching in the middle of season three because they make you like Philip then boom gone, and yes he dies but if you know the actual history then that had to happen for Catherine to be leader of Russia. So I wouldn’t really call that a spoiler!
If you’re looking for something different or maybe even something historical then i would definitely recommend giving “The Great” a try. Just a warning, you’ll end up hating every character at some point and I do mean all, which I can honestly say has never happened for me with any other show. Don’t worry though, hating the characters doesn’t take away from you enjoying the show, at least not in my opinion.

Melanie - I tried this when it came out and I 100% blame Sherry Ficklin's Stolen Empire book series for not allowing me to enjoy it!

For some reason, unbeknownst even to myself, The Mortal Instrument book series never crossed my path until after I had seen the movie, even though when you read the synopsis it all looks like something I would enjoy.
And enjoy I did, well the movie anyway. I actually hated the books and couldn't even get through the first one (yes yes I know - unpopular opinion - when has that ever stopped me).
The movie, that fans had been waiting on for years, got a LOT of hate. They hated the casting, they hated, well pretty much everything to do with it really, and it was by all definitions a box office flop. I didn't watch the movie until a few years after its DVD release but I LOVED IT, (Well apart from my vamp Mitchel in it as a wolf - THAT didn't work for me), but it seems I was definitely in the minority. I think it was one of those things where fans had already decided it wasn't what they wanted, and non fans (for the most part) found it was touching on too many elements to make it enjoyable. That being said, it is FULL of stars you will recognize and I definitely suggest checking it out - it's often streaming.
I did watch the TV Series (mainly because Jenn kept nagging me too), and that's a whole other take again. Throwing the world into a mix with futuristic style tech, and I wasn't sure about it at all. For the most part I prefer the movie casting but I will say Magus in the tv show is fabulous. I think it's one of those shows you have to watch a bit like True Blood and pretend there isn't anything already known, and then it's quite enjoyable (except the end - I agree with Jenn that what they considered to be an acceptable ending most definitely was not - despite the fact that the network gave them the episodes pretty much so that they COULD finish it).
If you like the supernatural and you haven't seen it my rec is check out the trailers below and you'll see which one might appeal more to you - or maybe you'll check out the books. The nice thing is the winner of the giveaway gets a chance for 2/3 of the starting options lol.

This is one movie where I actually enjoyed the show a little bit better, and no I didn’t read the books. "Shadowhunters" had quite a following as it went from books, then to movie form with "The Mortal Instruments : City of Bones", and then to a show on Freeform. Fans even tried to bring it back when it was canceled. Unfortunately their campaign did not work. I wasn’t a fan of the ending and to me it wasn’t closed even though the writers said it was.
I’m sure many have heard of this story either through reading the books or watching the movie or show. Clary learns on her birthday that maybe the world is more complicated than she thought. Demons basically exist and she’s part of an elite team that hunts them called the shadowhunters. Well at least they hunt the bad ones. I bet Clary misses when her only worry was getting into art school not fighting demons.
This story is definitely not one to be missed. Personally my advice is to watch the show but hey the movie is good as well, it just sucks that a second one was never made.

With The Tudors giveaway still being live I thought you might like to read my review from when the book was released in 2018 and it was actually my surprise book find of the year! (If you haven't entered the giveaway you can do so HERE)
Blurb About The Book
If you were one of King Henry VIII's six wives, who would you be? Would you be Anne Boleyn, who literally lost her head? The subject of rumor and scandal like Catherine Howard? Or would you survive like Anna of Cleves? Meet all Henry's queens--each bound for divorce or death--in this epic novel that reads like fantasy but really happened. Watch spellbound as each wife attempts to survive their unpredictable king as he grows more obsessed with producing a male heir. And discover how the power-hungry court fanned the flames of Henry's passions . . . and his most horrible impulses. Brought to life by seven award-winning and bestselling authors, here is an intimate look at the royals during one of the most treacherous times in history, perfect for anyone fascinated by Britain's Royal Family or Netflix's The Crown. |
Now For The Review
Standalone or series?
Standalone
How did I get this book?
Random send by the publisher
Why did I choose to read this book:
I love the Tudor history and this looked interesting.
Genre
Historical Fiction (with some biographical aspects)
And Now To The Review!
First Impressions:
This is slightly different from many that I have read with each "Queen" having her own voice given via being written by a separate author, and then one consistent author voice throughout, for the King.
General Review
I absolutely adore the Tudor history, both the actual history and various retellings that have occurred over the years (yes including the JRM TV show), and so I was very excited to see another version hitting the shelves.
Each queen managed to capture the voices much as I have imagined them over the years but I loved the slightly unique idea of hearing things from only their point of view. We all know that when it comes to history the victors generally write the history, the losers are either forgotten, or their tales are considered bitter, and the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.
Obviously the truth lies somewhere in the middle, but for me, this FELT real as I was reading it. Each of the queens broke my heart in their own way, and the king, well the King's portrayal was exactly as I have always imagined he would be.
Final Thoughts
A must-read for lovers of this time period. The best piece of historical fiction I have read in years! (This remains true even 5 years later!!)
Rating:
5 stars (even though I noted that the time that simply isn't enough!)
As always let me know what you think in the comments!

Divorced, Beheaded, Died ..... Divorced, Beheaded, Survived.
The six words we learned at school to help us remember the fate of the wives of Henry VIII because you could guarantee that it would be coming up on your history exam. Those 6 words have become so famous that they have been used to form the basis of a whole Broadway Musical - Six - which tells the story behind the wives- the story many don't know.
This period of history has ALWAYS been fascinating to me and I have read multiple accounts of what people say happened. Obviously, history is subjective (I mean as everyone knows - it was always recorded by the winners), but there are always some versions that seem to have more truth too them. The tv series "The Tudors", is in my opinion, one of the best versions out there. Although they take major liberties with the casting of Jonathon Rhys Meyers as King Henry, I can understand why. It is much easier to convince an audience that a good looking guy like him, full of charisma, could convince women to marry him, versus the truth was that the women really didn't have much of a choice and were basically political pawns. That, and of course, power was, and always will be, a very strong motivator.
For England his reign changed everything. I mean he literally created a new religion that stands today the "Church Of England" which really doesn't even have a parallel anywhere else in the world. We have the Catholics, and then CofE (which is probably closest to the protestant faith using the principles added in by Elizabeth - daughter of Anne Boleyn)

I could write about this for hours, but I won't. I will say the book in the giveaway was a surprise favorite for me - sent randomly by a publisher - but makes for a great read if you have any interest in this history at all. Even I learned new things (which I fact-checked - they were accurate), but I will leave you with my take on the SIX - Ex Wives song (which most you you will probably already have seen). |

So I recently just finished “The Tudors” which I had started with Mels when I went to visit her in March. I love history and have heard of King Henry the eighth of course and his wives but really never thought much about him. I don’t even remember if I learned about him in school. We probably did but that was so long ago, but anyways if you enjoy Tudor history then you should definitely check this show out.
Although JRM definitely looks nothing like the actual king Henry because if he did I’d get why he’d have so many women wanting to be with him. But since he was a big red headed ginger, I do not. Mels says it’s because of the power, (as “History of the World Part 1” says “Its good to be the king”) I still don’t get it. I guess it’s because I’m American and we don’t do kings or queens here, but anyways go check out the Tudors if you haven’t. It’s not a bad retelling and all episodes are now on Amazon Prime.

Aliens seem to be a popular theme with me. But what can I say except there's a lot of good movies that deal with them but none compare to this movie, at least in my opinion, and that movie is "E.T.". I mean you could say it’s almost one of the original alien movies and he’s even kind of cute for alien. So let me leave a trail of Reese's Pieces for you to follow as I tell you about this movie that was originally rejected by studios before finally getting made. I bet those studios regret that decision. It starts off in a normal alien movie type way. Kinda.
Instead of crashing, he lands his ship on Earth with others of his kind but is accidently left behind when they fly off to escape government officials. Not knowing what to do, he basically wanders until he meets the two kids that end up helping him get home, or should I say phone home. Though in movies you know it’s never quite that easy and this one is definitely no exception. Does E.T. end up finally getting home?
Well as this is a older classic I could give you the answer, but I won’t because like Mels some may never have seen it and I wouldn’t want to ruin it. So if you enjoy alien type movies and you have yet to see "E.T." then I suggest you definitely remedy that and soon Musers.
Melanie - And Mels has NO INTENTION OF EVER WATCHING IT EVER lol

Unless you are BRAND NEW to the site,(and well if you are then welcome,) then you will probably be aware of my fascination with vampires. I mean before I rebranded I was literally "The Vampire Loving Dork!" (and the name still fits). Of course you can't have vampires without Dracula, and although we have covered it before, Emily got an extra set of the NBC TV Series DVDs specifically for me to giveaway as we both love the show.
We are, in fact, in the minority when it comes to loving NBC's failed version. The story is unique, and whilst I don't know what the thinking was behind having Johnathon Rhys Meyers adopt an America accent - the costumes, the scenery, and the attention to details is exquisite. I watch those special features on the DVD often.

I remember when this series was about to launch in 2013 that it was featured very prominently at SDCC. There were special unlock times for exclusive stickers on Get Glue with codes to collect them all (you can bet I have them all lol). It felt like it was hyped up to be this larger than life reimagining of the classic tale - using older style filming techniques, actual puppetry, and some amazing choreography .... but sadly, between the late time slot on Friday nights on NBC, and the fact that it was just so different, it failed to find the audience it would have needed to be continued. |
Although there is only one season, which does end in a kind of cliffhanger - the story was obviously planned to continue, it isn't the kind of cliffhanger that kills you like other shows, For me I know what I think would have happened and I guess at least in THAT way there was no chance of them ruining it.
Check out the trailer for the series below (Sadly at the time of posting I couldn't find anywhere it was streaming - It was on NBC so maybe Peacock will eventually get it). and one of the behind the scenes clips (there are a lot more on the DVD).

Salem is one of my all time favorite shows. Complete at 3 seasons, because the writers knew what the plan was when they started, they were able to make an ending that even I will rewatch.
Taking actual events and characters from history, and putting a very magical spin on them, Salem is one of the darker TV shows that I watch (and coming from me you know that means it is DARK!) This is actually one of the TV shows Telfie was partnered with so I got to chat with writers and the network as Season 3 unfolded which was amazing. You can watch my totally cringy video from 6 years ago about the release of Season 3 below (or skip it - I mean I am very glad that my videos have improved lol).
All 3 seasons are currently streaming for free in the US on the CW app. I highly suggest if you like dark and witchy that you check it out!

This is one of those series that had been in my maybe watch pile and that was "Salem".
I’m really glad Mels suggested we watch it while I was up there and I absolutely love a good historical whether it be in movie, show or book. I’m sure we’ve all heard the stories of Salem and the witch trials that happened there. Before actually watching Salem I thought they’d stick to the history that I learned in school, but nope. New story but with same characters and honestly with this it works. I actually think that I prefer this way than what actually happened. It’s kind of just a bit more interesting and that’s probably why they did it this way-- to keep the audience interested. With this being an older show there might have been alot who have seen it already. Then again you may be like me and have not so I really won’t go into spoiler territory.
Like the actual historical events, you do have Mary and John, though in this version Mary is with John, and an actual witch. John is not married and wants to be with Mary. See how this twists the actual history? Well if you haven’t seen this show that will leave you on the edge of your seat, and if you like history like me, then definitely add this show to your must watch list.

Check out my review for Angel's Gambit by Susan Harris - and click the cosplay picture to see some behind the scenes pictures!
Blurb About The Book
Monsters are real… but they look like angels.
Raven Cassidy has always known that the real evil in her world came disguised as angels. Imprisoned deep in the dungeons of the angelic citadel for attempting to assassinate the Imperium, Raven has spent the last three years at their mercy. When the Commander of the Imperium’s warrior angels offers Raven a deal to find the spy within the citadel in exchange for her freedom; Raven sees a way to finally finish what she started.
For her plan to succeed, she has to work closely with the creatures who have kept her prisoner since she was seventeen. When the lines between enemy and friend start to get blurred, Raven must rely on her rigorous training, and mental grit to stay alive.
But Raven is hiding a secret, one that if exposed, could mean a swift execution at the hands of the very angel who makes her feel things she shouldn’t.
Time is running out, and being an Angel’s Gambit is harder than you’d think!
Book Details

How did I get this book?
It's a Susan Harris Book - I get to Alpha Read!
Why did I choose to read this book:
Because Susan Harris wrote it
Genre
Dystopian
And Now To The Review!
First Impressions:
I am not generally a fan of dystopian books but this is the second time that Susan Harris has me reading one. That opening totally had me hooked!
General Review
You know what I REALLY love in a book? More than a great main lead is a great villain and Rieka gives us that and more. Although the issue of angels not necessarily being the salvation people hope for has been addressed before, Susan manages to bring a whole new perspective. Her characters are flawed (yes even the protagonist), and even though most of them have some sort of supernatural power, they are still totally relatable. I really enjoyed the fact that there isn't a whole lot of romance. Yes there are undertones, but this is definitely not a romance book by any means (not that Susan can't write romance - followers of my reviews will know that she most certainly can), but it is a refreshing change for the main story to be filled with drama and intrigue, rather than love and lust.
Final Thoughts
Bring on book 2! Actually bring on all 5 - let's go with this - even though I have a sneaking suspicion that Rieka may not get the ending I think she deserves. #TeamAngel

An easy 5 stars!

Yo ho yo ho a pirates life for me. These movies have to be some of my favorites and with one of my favorite actors of all time in them and those movies are “Pirates of the Caribbean”.
After five movies I think it ended well. There was talk that there would be more but I hope not, especially now that Johnny Depp wouldn’t be in them. I’m sure everyone has seen these by now but if you haven’t these movies basically follow Jack Sparrow, Will turner and Elizabeth Swann on a high seas adventure. That is, until we get to the fourth movie.
Jacks in it but Will and Elizabeth are not. It’s alright in its own way but it’s still my least favorite though some may disagree with me. Can Jack and this rag tag team of pirates stop Davy Jones, Blackbeard and just other no good pirates along the way? Well, I could say yes because I’m sure there’s not many who haven’t seen these but I’ll just go with maybe.
If you haven’t by chance seen these incredible movies then remedy that now. And if you have them maybe it’s time for a rewatch. And stock up on rum so it won’t be gone.

Check out my review spoiler-free review for the latest book in the Night huntress series!
Note - Book 1 (9) is on sale at the time of posting for $2.49 on the kindle.
Blurb About The Book
If you thought you learned more about the dangerous and sexy alpha vampire, Bones, in the USA Today bestselling scorcher, THE OTHER HALF OF THE GRAVE, you haven't seen anything yet...
Cat disappeared from Bones’ life to protect him, but this Master vampire will keep his promise to find her.
Two hundred years of bounty hunting made Bones the best at what he does, yet it's still taken him four long years to find Cat, the half vampire now known as the "Red Reaper." There's a price on Cat's head, and not even her job as a secret government agent can save her. Only Bones can. But has time hardened Bones too much to love again? Or will his passion for Cat burn through every obstacle—alive, undead, or otherwise—between them?
The Details
Standalone or series?
This is a little different. It is "Technically" listed as Book 10 in the series. It is in fact Book 2 - but updated and told from Bones' (the other main character) perspective.
How did I get this book?
I was invited to review an ARC
Why did I choose to read this book:
I LOVED the Night Huntress series. I have read them all numerous times (including the spin offs - although for me they will never beat the original set)
Genre
Urban Fantasy
And Now To The Review!
First Impressions:
I know the original version (told from Cat's point of view) like the back of my hand. Having read book 1 from Bones' POV I was excited to read this one. As with the first book Jeaniene notes she made the decision to update certain parts to make it more relevant to today's readers. (The original was released over 10 years ago and we all know how technology has changed).
General Review
This story is fabulous. I mean really how could it not be, if you loved the original you are getting that and a little more. That being said I don't feel there was as much original content in this one versus the amount in the first book but that could be because Bones had less away time in this one. The majority of their story was them together - so maybe not as many opportunities?
If you love the original series then you will want to read this too.
Final Thoughts
If you haven't read the Night Huntress series, I supposed technically you could start with "The Other Half Of The Grave) which is the first book from this point of view and then go back and read the others. Personally I would suggest reading at least the first 2 Night Huntress series books first, although you will probably want to continue reading until you get through them - which isn't a bad thing.
Rating:
5 stars from me - It's the same story as book 2 so how could it not be!
As always let me know what you think in the comments!

Check out my review for Death Dates The Oracle (Nocturne Falls book 15) by Kristen Painter
Blurb About The Book
Welcome to Nocturne Falls, the town where Halloween is celebrated 365 days a year. The tourists think it's all a show: the vampires, the werewolves, the witches, the occasional gargoyle flying through the sky. But the supernaturals populating the town know better.
Living in Nocturne Falls means being yourself. Fangs, fur, and all.
Eamon Underwood isn’t what you’d call a social butterfly. In fact, he avoids people altogether, outside of his job at his uncle’s funeral home, where Eamon is the mortician. For him, being around the dead is easier than being around the living. Mostly because of his very curious gift that enables him to see just how long a person has left to live. That knowledge makes personal interaction far too difficult.
Until he meets Troula Kouris. And sees…nothing.
Troula comes to Nocturne Falls to join her crazy-cat-lady aunts as an oracle, one of the rare descendants of the original Greek oracles. She’s been preparing for it all of her life. Unfortunately, just before she leaves for Nocturne Falls, she gets an ominous prediction that leads her to believe becoming an oracle could be fatal. Or maybe the real danger is the darkly handsome neighbor who lives next door.
When Troula and Eamon make a curious connection that leads to romance, it seems the fates want them together, despite the risks. Can a little orange kitten really solve all of their problems? Or will it all end in a catastrophe?
The Review
Standalone or series?
Book 15 in the Nocturne Falls Series (Can be read as a standalone - more about that in the actual review)
How did I get this book?
PA Perks lol
Why did I choose to read this book:
I read EVERYTHING Kristen releases!
Genre
Paranormal Romance
And Now To The Actual Review Part!
First Impressions:
Followers of my reviews will know that the Nocturne Falls series holds a special place in my heart, yes even the books with the damn werewolves, not that this one features a werewolf but I am just throwing that out there and I normally recommend reading from the beginning. That being said - this one would actually provide a pretty good jumping in point (and you could go back and read the others)
This 15th installment, like the 14th introduces us to 2 new sets of people which again is a little detour from many of the previous installments where we have had known character and a newbie. There are still plenty of appearances from the regulars though but because we are seeing it all through new eyes, if this was your first introduction to the world it would work!
General Review
The main hero and his family in the book are Scottish. Now aa a rule I am not overly fond of that as a precedent (although the early seasons of Outlander may have persuaded me that in some cases it works - this is another of those cases), and whilst generally I would prefer a little Irish - here the Scottish works!
You get TWO new supernaturals in this story- well really more than two because all of the Scot lads have their power manifest in different ways, and then we have the Oracles and their powers, oh and you get a LOT of cats! So many cats! I have a couple of favorites so if you read be sure to let me know which ones you would have adopted lol.
As with the rest of the series there is a mystery to solve - which I am claiming 75% credit on, didn't quite get the last bit, but even solving most of it doesn't take away from the story. These are like Hallmark movies with a supernatural twist - you KNOW everything is going to work out in the end - but the journey is always a fun one.
Final Thoughts
I am completely in awe at the way Kristen is able to keep coming up with totally new variations on this theme AND twists I don't see coming - Oh and Eamon's power - I can only imagine how she came up with that one!

Rating:
An Easy 5 stars from me and definitely Melanie's Muses Approved!

Melanie - should need no introduction lol
It's no secret that I love a good romantic comedy, well OK even a not so good one at times, but The Wedding Date is definitely in my all time top 10 - probably right near the top. Packed to the brim with stars (probably more heavily influenced on the English side), this movie sees Dermot Mulroney as an "Escort For Hire" that Debra Messing does in deed hire to be her date for her super annoying sister's wedding (Amy Adams).
It's sort of like Pretty Woman in reverse but with a lot less of the annoying stuff. Add to the fact that Sarah Parish is in here as the crazy best friend (a more unusual role for her) and I will watch pretty much ANYTHING with her in, I honestly can't recommend this movie enough.
For whatever reason it's just not one that seems to pop up very often, and you know that here in Muserland we LOVE an underrated movie and so here is it. I made Jenn watch it when she was here (I tried and failed to make Susan watch it lol), and she loved it too - which i why it now has a feature!

She loves TV (especially things that make you smile), Doctor Who, Finding new shows, and regularly provides awesome fandom items for Muser Giveaways. This movie that I just recently saw reminds me of "Pretty Woman" in reverse. Think about the guy being the escort instead of the woman and that movie is "Wedding Date". Thanks Mels for introducing me to it. In this movie Kat hires Nick, a male escort, to be her date for her sister's wedding because her ex will end up being there. I mean who hasn’t done something crazy to spite their ex? But anyways, moving on.
You know craziness will ensue and of course since it’s romantic they will end up falling in love but how they get there is the fun part. I mean I didn’t even know this movie existed so I’m sure a lot of others don’t either so no spoilers. Go watch this underrated movie for yourselves, and maybe like me you might just enjoy it more than "Pretty Woman".

This movie might have some controversy to it but I still like it. Well the first one at least and that’s “Revenge of the Nerds”.
This movie proves that is truly is brains over brawn and nerds can take a stand and outsmart the bully jocks and beat them. And quite honestly it’s just a fun one to watch. Who doesn’t love a good nerds vs jocks romp?
Lewis and his friend Gilbert head off to college not realizing that it’s not going to be as fun or easy as they think. They even end up getting kicked out of there dorms because the jocks burn down there fraternity house. Banding together with other nerds they find a home and fight back to become a fraternity of their own. Lewis may not realize he’s a nerd but in the end it doesn’t really matter because he shows you along with the rest of them that no matter what title you might have been given in highschool or college even, you can still end up on top.

Melanie - Great pick Jenn. Firstly - THIS WAS THE 80s - so haters need to get over it.
Secondly - Random Fun fact - when you get down to the giveaway question I definitely consider myself a Nerd and any other various labels. In fact I wrote about it OVER 10 YEARS AGO - if you are bored you can read the article HERE. That article lead to me being invited to audition for the TBS Show "King of the Nerds" - Which I obviously didn't do lol.

I’ve talked about Beauty and the Beast before but this actually has to be one of my favorite non-traditional versions of the story and that’s Beastly.
This non-traditional version takes us to a modern day high school, where a not so friendly popular boy messes with the wrong girl, who in true in Beauty and the Beast fashion happens to be a witch that curses him until just like with the regular story someone loves him for who he is not what he looks like.
Instead of a rose in glass, he has a tree tattooed on his arm that looses leaves. Does he get the heroine of this story to see him for who he is, well I don't think it's really a spoiler to say yes but it takes him a little while to get there. (Well there wouldn't be a movie otherwise).
If you like the Beauty and the Beast story but have never seen this one then I definitely would recommend that you check it out, but like I said it’s retelling of the story with a very different twist.

These movies are some of fantasy’s best and they’re even based on books. Per usual, I haven’t read them and that’s the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. It even has a prequel trilogy and a prequel series on amazon but let’s just put that series in the “it doesn’t exist” pile.
These movies take you on a fun adventure as our main hero who just happens to be a hobbit tries to get rid of and destroy a ring that could end up tearing apart the entire middle earth. Frodo along with his band of friends, or the fellowship of the ring, as they’re called, head out to destroy it by the only means that they can. Along the way they run into not so friendly foes, and also have to keep away from Sauron finding out where they possibly are.
Now I’m sure everyone has seen these movies by now, but if you by some miracle have not or maybe just think you might not enjoy these. I definitely will say watch and see because this is one adventure you definitely shouldn’t miss. For the superfans, there are extended versions which turn a 3 hour movie into an even longer journey.

This movie is one of those that kind of reminds you no matter how hard you try and how much you want to, you can’t really run or hide where you’re from. “Sweet Home Alabama” is an older movie but boy do I enjoy watching it.
Melanie leaves her home in Alabama and moves to New York City, meeting the man that she eventually wants to marry. But before that can happen she needs to head home, and make sure she gets her divorce finalized. A current marriage is sure to a stop to another oncoming marriage. Enter none other than her childhood sweetheart, Jake. So can Melanie get the divorce she needs before her new fiancé realizes what’s going on or that she has been lying to him all along about where she’s from?
When two ex’s collide could old fireworks start to happen again? Well, maybe. But if you haven’t seen this classic then you definitely need to. It even throws the song “Sweet Home Alabama” in the movie and I’m sure we’ve all heard that one.
