Melanie - should need no introduction lolDivorced, Beheaded, Died ..... Divorced, Beheaded, Survived. The six words we learned at school to help us remember the fate of the wives of Henry VIII because you could guarantee that it would be coming up on your history exam. Those 6 words have become so famous that they have been used to form the basis of a whole Broadway Musical - Six - which tells the story behind the wives- the story many don't know. This period of history has ALWAYS been fascinating to me and I have read multiple accounts of what people say happened. Obviously, history is subjective (I mean as everyone knows - it was always recorded by the winners), but there are always some versions that seem to have more truth too them. The tv series "The Tudors", is in my opinion, one of the best versions out there. Although they take major liberties with the casting of Jonathon Rhys Meyers as King Henry, I can understand why. It is much easier to convince an audience that a good looking guy like him, full of charisma, could convince women to marry him, versus the truth was that the women really didn't have much of a choice and were basically political pawns. That, and of course, power was, and always will be, a very strong motivator. For England his reign changed everything. I mean he literally created a new religion that stands today the "Church Of England" which really doesn't even have a parallel anywhere else in the world. We have the Catholics, and then CofE (which is probably closest to the protestant faith using the principles added in by Elizabeth - daughter of Anne Boleyn)
Jenn - Jennifer Rhodes met Melanie back when True Blood was popular and they have been friends ever since. She loves TV (especially things that make you smile), Doctor Who, Finding new shows, and regularly provides awesome fandom items for Muser Giveaways. Jennifer is now a proud member of the VIPers - the Melanie's Muses Spotlight Feature Team!So I recently just finished “The Tudors” which I had started with Mels when I went to visit her in March. I love history and have heard of King Henry the eighth of course and his wives but really never thought much about him. I don’t even remember if I learned about him in school. We probably did but that was so long ago, but anyways if you enjoy Tudor history then you should definitely check this show out. Although JRM definitely looks nothing like the actual king Henry because if he did I’d get why he’d have so many women wanting to be with him. But since he was a big red headed ginger, I do not. Mels says it’s because of the power, (as “History of the World Part 1” says “Its good to be the king”) I still don’t get it. I guess it’s because I’m American and we don’t do kings or queens here, but anyways go check out the Tudors if you haven’t. It’s not a bad retelling and all episodes are now on Amazon Prime.
