Jenn - Jennifer Rhodes met Melanie back when True Blood was popular and they have been friends ever since. She loves TV (especially things that make you smile), Doctor Who, Finding new shows, and regularly provides awesome fandom items for Muser Giveaways. Jennifer is now a proud member of the VIPers - the Melanie's Muses Spotlight Feature Team!"You’ve got to go on and dig those holes." This sticks in my head every time I see this movie and of course it’s “Holes” which was also a book first, that I never read. I really do seem to do that a lot watch a movie but actually never read the book that it’s from. Basically it’s about the Yelnats and a family curse that spans generations. Stanley finds himself in trouble after being accused of stealing a basketball players shoes. Getting sent to a work camp, Stanley finds out that’s exactly the last place he wants to be. Though it’s not all bad when he meets a few friends and earns the name Caveman. Can Stanley really figure out what’s going on with this camp and why them digging holes builds character as the warden likes to say? Is she right or is there something a lot deeper going on here like maybe a mystery that goes back a bit through time, way before this camp even existed? The Pineapple Code Word For This Article Is Holes And Now For The Giveaway Melanie's Muses will be giving away a "Holes" prize pack including The DVD and the Book sent in by Jenn For your chance to win- FILL OUT THE FORM and tell us: Do you believe in Curses? I'll start with Tom as Alfie Solomons in Peaky Blinders. It takes a rare talent for someone to come into an already established show with a sublime cast of actors and steal the entire show! From the moment Alfie appeared on screen, with his short fuse and hilarious one liners, he quickly became one of my fave characters in any TV show. It's still hard to believe that Alfie is only in 13 episodes of Peaky Blinders!!! The dynamic between Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby, and Tom's Alfie just adds so much value to the show, but to be fair, I would 100% be up for an Alfie spin off where it's just Alfie, doing Alfie things in London... Melanie - Ummmm just make sure you put the subtitles on ... omg even I had a hard time with this accent! |
The Take is a four-part British television crime drama series, adapted from the novel by Martina Cole, that first broadcast on Sky1 in 2009. The Take follows the activities of criminal sociopath Freddie Jackson , who has recently been released from prison, only to find that his cousin Jimmy is attempting to make a name for himself on the back of his reputation. This was my introduction to Tom, and I was captivated even then. I remember thinking that Tom had the potential to be a massive star, even then. |
Bronson has got to to be one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. The film follows the life of this prisoner, considered Britain's most violent criminal, who has been responsible for a dozen or so cases of hostage taking while incarcerated. He was given the name Charles Bronson by his fight promoter, for his bare-knuckle fighting years. Hardy's portrayal of Bronson is one of my favorite's. I laughed so hard watching this and as Bronson tended to do, some of the movie is essential just Tom naked doing crazy shit. It might have been a daunting prospect to take on the role, knowing that Bronson might one day watch it, but despite being opposed to Tom's casting at the start, but after a few phone calls, Bronson gave Tom his seal of approval, and even stated that he believes Hardy was the only person who could play him. |
Lawless was not a great movie. Shia LeBeouf was awful. The pace of the movie was a little flat. But Tom Hardy was hilariously brilliant in this for a character who barely spoke, wore a cardigan and a hat, and just grunted. I'm pretty sure one of the main reasons I love Roy Kent from Ted Lasso so much is that he reminded me of Forest in Lawless! LOL Now, if someone could just get Tom and Brett Goldstein together in a movie, where they play two grumpy bastards, I would very much appreciate it. |
Legend is a 2015 biographical crime thriller film and is adapted from John Pearson's book The Profession of Violence: The Rise and Fall of the Kray Twins, which deals with their career and the relationship that bound them together, and follows their gruesome career to life imprisonment in 1969 Tom plays both twins in Legend, and he seamlessly was able to give a accurate portrayal of Reggie, who was able to hide his volatile nature to an extent, and Ronnie, his paranoid schizophrenic twin. I mean, I was sold on this when I heard it was about the Kray twins, but finding out that it would mean twice as much Tom Hardy in it, I was sold! Plus I do love Tom in a very nice suit... Melanie - OK I will give you this one - it is an excellent movies. I mean I don't like the way they did the narrative but Tom's performances were fabulous. I still prefer the Kemp bothers Krays though. |
Warrior is a gritty film about family, brotherhood, and how fighting for different causes can bring two brothers back together. The storytelling in Warrior, is profound, and full of heart. You can see how both the brothers have been affected by their upbringing, and by the things life has thrown at them. Tommy and Brendan are both complex on their own, and Tom's pre-production preparation that meant he went through a demanding training routine for gaining muscle, gaining around 28 pounds (13 kg) of muscle. This was also something he would do for The Dark Knight Rises and shows how far Tom is willing to go to realistically portray his characters. |
Melanie - As a note on Taboo season 2 (which was renewed back in 2017 when it first aired is actually still happening. There were talks before the strikes that they were hoping to coordinate schedules to film this year but that is delayed again).
Now, to the fun stuff!
Somewhere out there, two brilliant marketing geniuses earned a hell of a lot of money when they pitched the idea of having Tom Hardy in TV Adverts. As as staunch anti-Apple product person, I have never, ever wanted an I-phone more than when Tom told me I wanted one.
And I would gladly go out and buy an Audi, if it meant that Tom Hardy came with it!

Tom is generally known to be a big softy. He loves dogs, and he loves children. He loves children so much that he agreed to take part in a children's TV channel promotion where Celebs read bedtime stories...Tom's stories were so popular with mammies and those of us not mammies, that he broke the internet...ALOT!!! Even wearing some god awful cardigan's that man is just sexy AF! While a host of other stars have done a bedtime story or two, Tom's will always be my favorite, because when Tom Hardy tells me it's time to go to bed, I'm damn well gonna go! |

Melanie - Annnnd she didn't even discuss one of the few I actually love ..... This Means War (other than a quick mention) ! But you can google a trailer for that at this point. If anyone watches all of those you will be helping keep the BBC in revenue another year I'm sure!

The Summer Palace: A Midlife Fairy Tale Book 2 - A Release Day Spoiler Free Review From Melanie
7/14/2023
Basic Info
Standalone or series?
Book 2 in the Midlife Fairy Tale Series (CANNOT BE READ AS A STAND ALONE)
Category
Paranormal Women's Fiction
Official Blurb About The Book (From the Amazon Page)
Newly crowned queen of the Radiant fae, Sparrow “Ro” Meadowcroft has two goals. First, to show her fae subjects that despite growing up in the mortal realm, she plans to honor the customs and practices of her new world. Second, to reunite the Radiant fae with the Grym fae. Or at least broker peace between the two estranged kingdoms.
How? By returning to the Summer Palace, an old tradition that once brought both kingdoms and their rulers together for a time of relaxation and fellowship. She’s invited the ruler of the Grym, too: Queen Anyka
Ro hopes the neutral ground of Willow Hall will provide a fresh start and a chance at diplomacy, but the old palace holds dark secrets that could mean the end of the Radiant fae. Or a new day for the Grym.
Can Ro win Anyka over or has too much blood already been spilled? And why does Willow Hall seem like the start of more trouble? All Ro knows for sure is that magic abounds in the Summer Palace. And not all of it’s good.
How did I get this book?
PA Perks lol
Why did I choose to read this book: I read EVERYTHING Kristen releases!
And Now To The Review!
First Impressions:
This book pretty much picks up right where book one ended, with very little having happened which I always appreciate.
General Review
Carrying on the dual perspective with input from our main protagonist Queen Sparrow, and the antagonist Queen Anyka of the other half of the other half of the Kingdom, the narrative leans heavily towards Sparrow's story but the insights from the other Queen allow information that is really useful to the story, even if I still got blindsided by a few things (which is always fun - I do like a good jaw dropping moment). There is a little romance, but the story definitely leans more towards the mystery solving angle.
Final Thoughts
Book 2 by no means wraps everything up, but as with the first one, the story is complete enough that you don't feel the need to throw your kindle at the all in frustration while frantically looking for book 3, although that being said I definitely can't wait for book 3!
Rating
An Easy 5 stars from me and definitely Melanie's Muses Approved!

If you've been reading our Must Read Authors features that have been posted throughout June, then you already know I'm a massive Ilona Andrews fan and the Kate Daniel's world.
|
Blurb About The Book
A new town, new friends, new challenges…. And a new heart-stopping adventure from #1 New York Times bestselling author, Ilona Andrews. Kate, Curran, and Conlan may have left Atlanta for Wilmington, but the usual magic mayhem has also hitched a ride! Kate and Curran have just settled into their new home and their 'low profile,' when a local businessman approaches them with an offer they can’t refuse. A mysterious evil has spawned in the nearby forest and is holding a defenseless town hostage. The ‘due date’ is rapidly approaching. It’s exactly the kind of fight the Lennarts can’t resist, not for the prize the town offers, but for the people who will surely die if they ignore it. If they succeed, they’ll be rescuing an entire community and can build a strong new base for their family and the Wilmington Pack. If they fail...well, fail is a four-letter word. Nothing comes without a price. Now Kate must decide if she has what it takes to pay it. |
Now For The Review
Standalone or series?
Part of the Kate Daniels World - Needs to be read in order!!!!
How did I get this book?
Sent by publisher to Mel as we've read and reviewed The Hidden Legacy series before.
Why did I choose to read this book:
See opening paragraph! LOL
Genre
Urban Fantasy
And Now To The Review!
First Impressions:
It was so easy to slip back into the Kate Daniels world, and I was absorbed in the story from the moment I turned the first page - or at least flipped the kindle book!
General Review
Magic Claims picks up shortly after the end of book 1, taking us back into Kate and Curran during their Wilmington years. I loved jumping back into this world, in a new location, but the same problems as Kate and Curran, and now Conlan, seem to draw to them no matter how normal they would like life to be. But when you are the daughter of God and your husband was the Beast Lord of the pack, normal isn't quite on the table, is it?
There are a lot of things that Kate comes to realize in this book, vital things, and it sets the series wide open for interaction with old friends...and family that has been distant - BUT no spoilers so let's just say that I'd expect a crossover or two in the next book...whenever that might come out.
One of my fave things is the interactions between Curran and Conlan, and Kate and Conlan, and how they both have vital roles to play in Conlan's story.
Final Thoughts
A must-read for fans of the series, or new readers once they've gotten caught up.

Welcome to Win It Wednesday! This week's Win it Wednesday is back to more of the regular format and because we were talking about the new Fright Night version on Sunday - Melanie decided to roll with that this week! Make sure you scroll down for details on how to enter the giveaway too, and as always be sure to let us know what you think! |
Melanie - Founder of Melanie's Muses - You should know who I am lol If not click - All about Melanie!
You can't really go wrong if you are looking to watch a version of Fright Night. The 80's version is an absolute classic that Greg and I throw lines from on a fairly regular basis. OK 2 lines - "You're So Cool Brewster", and "You Have To Have Faith". But today I am going to switch gears and talk about that evil R word - the remake!
Fright Night is one of those very few movies that ACTUALLY did the remake RIGHT! I will admit - having David Tennant prancing about in leather, dressed as a Cris Angel wannabe DID mean that I was at least going to watch it for that, although we generally do TRY and give remakes a chance, even if only so that we can slate it with properly reasoned arguments.
That being said this was actually a really GOOD remake. There were GOOD changes made but you could clearly see references to the original (such ad the apple). They updated to make it more relevant, which almost 20 years later was needed, whilst still playing a good homage to the original. They even had a cameo from Chris Saranden himself although you would REALLY need to know the original to catch it!
This movie is proof that a remake CAN be worth it. My ONLY real complaint? In the original there is this fabulous night club scene with Amy and Jerry which the remake totally skimped on. They had them in a bar/club situation, there were other people dancing, and this is SUCH an iconic scene to me that I would have loved to have seen what Colin Farrell would have done with it.
Trailers to both versions - the 1985 original and the 2011 remake (and a bonus clip of David Tennant as he is NOT in the official trailer). There are sequels to both movies - both called "Fright Night Part 2". The sequel to the 1985 version IS an actual sequel - the part 2 for the 2011 version - almost seems to be a new remake again with no real connection to anything - so just skip that lol.

Welcome to Win It Wednesday! This week's Win it Wednesday is a little different (again) as we wanted to feature Greg's Resin Creations! With the prep for FC3 well underway you can see a bit of what's happened over the last year! Make sure you scroll down for details on how to enter the giveaway too, and as always be sure to let us know what you think! |
Melanie - Should need no introduction!
It was a little over a year ago that Greg really started getting into making resin pieces. He'd made a few bits in the past, usually for particular things, but he was started to make things just to see what he could do and have some fun with it! Then, we discovered Melanie's Muses had a table at FC3 and the race was on to get some things to put on it!
That was the first mass production of bears! We gave them away as prizes, and then the Musers fell in love and they have purchased lots of them since then .... but oh how Greg's skills have improved.
That was the first mass production of bears! We gave them away as prizes, and then the Musers fell in love and they have purchased lots of them since then .... but oh how Greg's skills have improved.
Little by little the back room has become Greg's work shop. The little space in the corner has grown and we now have tables, and drawers filled with molds, key chains, and no end of weird and wonderful little things that Greg thinks might be fun to make something with at some point. Ollie also loves to help, so if you ever find cat hair in your resin - it's probably his! |
One of the biggest changes involves Melanie's Muses! The official subscribers group (Which can be found here) gets "Defects for the Rejects" offered fairly regularly (basically things Greg doesn't think are suitable for sale). They also have exclusive collectables (Like the Keys), and first dibs on things that go up for sale. There is also the regular Resin Group - Greg's Resin Creations (which can be found here), where Greg often posts things that he is working on, updates, coming soon pieces, and any other randomness he feels like. There are also giveaways so watch out for them! |
Who knows what Greg will come up with next? One of the most fun little pieces he made recently is this little pig on a swing! This was a "test run" and so it isn't getting sold ... BUT we ARE GIVING IT AWAY in the prize pack below! Can't wait to hear what you think of it! | |
