Melanie - Founder of Melanie's Muses - You should know who I am lol If not click - All about Melanie!Do you remember we used to feature music quite regularly? Well we are bringing it back - and that would be the "Royal We" as itis in fact ALLLLL Susan! Every week she will be sharing what's new, what we should be checking out, and then it would be a feature here without a little throwback. So sit back - and get ready to jam .... and be sure to let is know what you think! Susan - Susan Harris is a writer from Cork, Ireland and when she’s not torturing her readers with heart-wrenching plot twists or killer cliffhangers, she’s probably getting some new book related ink, binging her latest TV or music obsession, or with her nose in a book. She is a proud founding Member of the Muser VIPers and is responsible for Melanie not breaking the Website on an almost daily basis! |
Ryan Sheridan - TimeI have been a fan of Ryan's music and his voice, so was delighted to find out that he was releasing new music. I met him once, many, many years ago at a fan meet and greet and he is genuinely one of the nicest people you could meet. Time is a steering wheel tapping, windows down kinda song that will get your shoulders moving and maybe giving a one finger salute if you've had a bad day! If you haven't listened to any of Ryan's music before, then and stream all his songs now!
Dermot Kennedy - SundayIf you've ever listened to any of my book playlists, then you know I adore Dermot and his voice. Sunday is a song that showcases his voice with brutally honest lyrics about a love lost, and the regret, as well as the wish to go back and relive the good times. An honest, raw, song that only showcases just how talented Dermot is by a performance with just a piano and his wonderful, wonderful voice.
The Neon Cars - Sitting in the BackseatOf course I had to throw a Cork band into the mix! The Neon Cars is definitely a band to watch and I think they will have a great career ahead of them. I don't think I've heard a bad song from them since I first heard them on the radio...
Pa Sheehy - WretchedAnother incredible artist and voice, Pa Sheehy has a voice that is instantly recognizable. A friend of mine showed me some videos of a performance that Pa did in a church and it was WOW! I loved Pa when he was part of the band Walking on Cars, and he's on my list of artists I'd love to see live.
Gavin James - White NoiseWell, the last of my Irish list this week is Gavin James! I really like this catchy boppy song that will have you singing along in the car and tapping the steering wheel...or your feet depending on where you hear it!
Jazzy - StardustThis was the first time I'd heard of Jazzy and it reminded me of an old school floorfiller from the 90's and 00's.
Dead Poet Society - How Could I Love You? Right, let's finish with a rockier song! I've loved a lot of songs that Dead Poet Society have done and this one has already been added to my writing playlists! I have an angsty Rebel County book coming in 2024 and this song is the perfect one for a certain character that you've met briefly in Secrets in Ink

This week Jenn is talking about a horror series that most of you are probably at least vaguely familiar with - unlike the weirdness Susan and I are sharing with the 31 Days lol And yes - you might feel like you are experiencing a little Deja Vu from last week .... but this is all new! Make sure you scroll down for details on how to enter the giveaway too, and as always be sure to let us know what you think! |
Jenn - Jennifer Rhodes met Melanie back when True Blood was popular and they have been friends ever since. She loves TV (especially things that make you smile), Doctor Who, Finding new shows, and regularly provides awesome fandom items for Muser Giveaways. Jennifer is now a proud member of the VIPers - the Melanie's Muses Spotlight Feature Team!
Now I’m sure everyone knows who Freddy is even if you’ve never seen a Nightmare on Elm Street movie. At this point he’s a pretty famous horror icon, and some people dress up for him every year on Halloween. I know I’ve seen a few come to my door, they’ll even go to cons as Freddy. I think some of the best Freddy cosplays are the gender bend ones. Absolutely amazing.
In the movie, the character of Freddy is basically killed in a fire, but keeps coming back as a dream demon, well I guess that’s how he can kill you in your dream and make it stick in the real world. All I can say is I’m glad Freddy is only in the imagination of Wes Craven because if he wasn’t, then I’d definitely never sleep again.
One two Freddie’s coming for you, three four better lock your door, five six grab your crucifix, seven eight better stay up late, nine ten never sleep again.
Melanie - Founder of Melanie's Muses - You should know who I am lol If not click - All about Melanie!
I will agree that Robert Englund is fabulous as Freddy though. I think I have seen all of the movies at least once, and the remake, but honestly, none compare to the first in my opinion.

Fred Again...&Jozzy - tenI'm quite fond of Fred Again... Listening to his music reminds me of teen listening to pirate radio, when dance music was good and original, and reminded me of the good ole days. If you liked this, then check out out Clara (The night is dark) It's my fave song of his.
Paloma Faith- How You Leave A ManPaloma Faith has one of those instantly recognizable voices and I love this upbeat, let's go girl's kinda song about leaving that man behind who didn't threat you well.
Blink 182 - Fell In LoveBlink 182 are on a roll with all their new releases and I am here for it. They have adapted their songs to appeal to newer listeners, but also kept with their signature sound and silliness to appease the elder emo's. This is just one of those silly songs with lyrics that make ya wanna smile.
Beartooth - I Was AliveI'd heard of Beartooth before, even listened to a few songs, but having listened to a few songs on their new album, I'll defo be checking them out. Not sure I'm digging the pink suits in the music video but that's okay!
Feeder - Playing with FireAh, Feeder...taking me back to my teen years and two of the best rock songs of the 90's and 00's in Buck Rodgers and Just a Day, Playing with Fire reminds me of those songs and you can defo hear the Feeder sound. This was immediately added to my playlist!!
Rick Astley - Forever and MoreI added this song because it reminded me of Mel! That is all LOL Melanie - Mwahahahah NOT SORRY - Also this does NOT sound like Rick Astley
Yungblud (Ft Oli Sykes of Bring Me The Horizon)Yungblud and Oli team up again for an amazing collab! Love the lyrics and the slightly heavy dance music.
Bring Me The Horizon - DArkSideThis of course is my song of the week! I've made no secret about my love of BMTH or front-man, Oli Sykes - fun fact, my Oli Scott from Rebel County is based off Oli, his middle name is Scott ( See obsessed a little. Love the mix of singing and throaty vocals! Plus, I'm seeing BMTH and Bad Omens in January so I am VERY excited!!!!!

Well enough about that, I want to talk about Freddy vs Jason, yes this movie got a lot of hate, but I actually enjoyed it. I mean take two horror icons and make them fight each other, what could go wrong? Well a lot actually, Freddy actually only wakes Jason up because he needs his help, meaning the town has forgotten him and he’s lost his control over dreams and the ability to kill in them. So in comes Jason, but you know slashers they listen to no one and that’s exactly what happens here.
Jason goes his own way, pissing off Freddy, that’s where the fighting between them starts. Who wins, well if you haven’t seen this horror icon of a movie then I suggest you watch and find out. Also you know those times where they pick the right actor for a role, and in your mind he’s forever that character, well this happens with Robert Englund. He’s the perfect Freddy, and no one I mean no one could ever take his place. I mean look at the remake, no thanks. I’ll pass

Jayne Frost and husband Sinclair Crowe are off on another adventure, this time to Nashville, aka Music City, to pay a royal visit to one of the Santa’s Workshops toy stores. Once that’s done, they’ll have a little time to sightsee and play tourist.
Which they do. Until something rather peculiar happens in the Country Music Hall of Fame that leaves Sinclair feeling all shook up.
Suddenly, they have a new mystery to solve. And time is ticking for Sinclair. Even a necromancer can only take so much.
Can Jayne and Sinclair get to the bottom of things before it’s too late?
REVIEW
Standalone or series?
Book 3 in the spin off Frost And Crowe Mystery series (which spins off from the Miss Frost Mysteries)
How did I get this book?
It was Because I read EVERYTHING Kristen writes!
Why did I choose to read this book:
Because Kristen wrote it!
Genre
Paranormal Cozy Mystery
And Now To The Review!
First Impressions:
At this point we are 10 1/2 books into Jayne's story (7 Main Jayne Frost Books, 1 Novella, and 2 previous Frost and Crowe) and we are joining the main characters a couple of months after the last story.
General Review
This is exactly the sort of story I have come to expect with Jayne. There is LOTS of food mentioned (which always sounds amazing and makes me hungry), and there is an unusual take on a story idea that has been done before - but this makes it all feel new.
The fact that Jayne and Sin are on the road still touring various stores allows easily for a new adventure without it seeming weird that yet again they are solving a murder, well in this case a cold case .... which is PERFECT for Jayne and a nice throw back to the first Jayne Frost book.
Final Thoughts
In theory, I suppose you could read this as a standalone. Objectively all the information is there to make it work, but I would recommend at least reading the first 2 Frost and Crowe books to get the most enjoyment out of it. Oh and have snacks handy!
Rating:
5 Stars! And a full Melanie's Muses approval!

ARC Book Review With Mel and Sue - Alternate Academy (Alternate Academy Book 1) by Melissa Woods
10/16/2023
Standalone or series?
Melanie - Book 1 in a new series
Susan - Book 1 in a new series
Category
Melanie - YA Paranormal
Susan - YA Paranormal
Official Blurb About The Book
Being a teenager can be hard. Being a teenager with supernatural abilities can be murder.
Nova Harris hasn’t had the easiest life. Her mother died when she was five, and she never knew her father. Her stepdad wasn’t exactly the warm and fuzzy type…but Nova had never meant to kill him. Now Nova has discovered that she is an Alternate – a person with supernatural abilities – and that there are others just like her at Tidemarsh: a school for freaks.
When Nova finds herself drawn to a mysterious boy being held in The Tombs; a place where the most dangerous Alternates are locked away in the dark, she ends up with more questions than answers. The more she explores, the more secrets she uncovers that she really should have left well alone.
Welcome to Alternate Academy, where the only things not falling apart, are probably already on fire!
How did we get this book?
CTP Signed it - and then Susan did the Developmental Edits on it
Why did we choose to read this book: See "How We Got The Book" lol
And Now To The Review!
First Impressions:
Melanie - I love the opening to this book. It's so crazy and drops you right into probably the worst moment so far of Nova's life!
Susan - I am quite fond of a book that slaps you right in the face with something the moment you open the first page and that's exactly what you get when you dive in to Alternate Academy.
General Review
Melanie - Kids with misfit powers and abilities - some of which can kill (either accidentally or on purpose), plus a pretty snarky English teen made this an easy page turner. Some of the abilities make me wonder how they would ever be useful .... and then there are others where I would definitely not mind having. The story layers up as we discover things along with Nova, and one thing is certain ... pretty much nothing here is as it seems. I have read Melissa's work before and I have to say this series has levelled up majorly, and maybe because I know Susan's writing style so well, but I could definitely feel her influence in places, and the final result definitely leads me to want book 2 NOW!
Susan - I fell in love with this book and it's characters right from the get go. This is exactly what I imagine teens would be like if they had special abilities. And like Mel said...some abilities were ones you'd be thrilled to wake up with one day...and others not so much LOL But of course like every great YA book, nothing is quite like it seems and Nova has to find her way in her new normal...
Oh and there's a mysterious, broody, bad boy... #justsayin
Melanie - Oh yep - that too! Am a bit of a fan of a bad boy lol
Final Thoughts
Melanie - . A great start to this new series. I'm very intrigued as to where this will go .... I do know that I wouldn't be sharing Nova's hesitation about certain things lol ... when you read it - you'll get that!
Susan - A brilliant, twisty, opener to a series that's X-Men meets Red Queen and Shatter me with a British twist!
Melanie - Well that made my final thoughts look a bit crap didn't it, but she's not wrong.
Rating
Melanie – 4 1/2 rounded up to 5 stars and a strong recommendation that all Musers go and read it.
Susan - Has to be 5 stars - A brilliant start to what's gonna be a epic series! Go get it now!!
Be sure to let us know in the comments below if you liked our "double take" on the same book and if you have a book you would like us to read just let us know!

Måneskin - Honey(Are Coming?)Everyone who's been paying attention knows that me and Mel love a bit of Måneskin. I wanna be your slave is our go to song and I think we like it more cause Greg HATES it! Honey (Are U Coming?) has the same catchy qualities of I Wanna be your slave and is full of cheeky and fun lyrics - defo worth checking out and having a bop to.
Ruelle - Mind SpinI've always been a fan of Ruelle and her voice, and Mind Spin begins in a haunting tone before it kicks in. I always think of how cinematic all her songs sound, and there is no surprise how many songs have featured in TV Shows.
Alesso & John Newman (Andromedik remix) Call Your NameI'm currently preparing to write the last book in the Rebel Books series, and Sorcha is found of a boppy track. This song is defo a night out on the dancefloor track or a nod your head in the car kinda song, and I love John Newman's voice.
Gunship ft Lights - Empress of the DamnedWhen I first saw the name of the song and listened to it, I immediately thought of Mel. I mean it totally fits her, right? I like the mix of ominous sounding music, and the dancy undertones. It's defo a song I could see give her song inspiration for a cosplay. And the sudden saxophone that should not sound like it works but it totally does!
Unsecret Quartet - VampireUnsecret are a group that I have followed for their reworks of songs and original tracks for a long time. Cinematic songs is one way to describe them and I have used a fair few songs in cover reveals and book quotes. I was delighted when I found that they had a sort of spin off group that specializes in classic twists on popular songs. I love this version of Vampire by Olivia Rodrigo, far better than the original one!
Joel Corry - Hey DJI'm fully convinced that Joel Corry is the reverse version of Michael Bublé... when Bublé goes into hibernation for summer, Joel comes out with his summer soundtracks. If anyone has read More Than Words, they know I give poor Joel a bit of stick...but in all fairness this track reminds me a little of 90's dance tracks and its another song from Sorcha's playlist. This song is one that will definitely make you wanna go out and hit the dancefloor.
League of Legends ft New Jeans - GodsThis song is taking from League of Legends, which has some really amazing songs. I've gotten a few songs over the years from their playlists. New Jeans (No, Mel not your dancing jeans) is a South Korean girl group that I hadn't heard of before, but I like the sound of their voices, so defo gonna check out some of their songs to see if I can tolerate the popness. Melanie - My dancing jeans are awesome - you need to add some Bollywood in your life lmao.
Wargasm Ft Fred Durst - Bang ya HeadListen, the song had me at Fred Durst, but Bang Ya Head is a hard-hitting electro rock song. it's one of those songs that deserves to be on angry playlist! Probably not a band you guys would have heard of since Wargasm are UK based back, but they have some great songs so you should check them out.
Dance with Me - Blink 182
That opening line of the song OMFG This is my song of the week! I love this so much. it's got that feel good factor that reminds me their early songs and the video is hilarious. Plus any song that includes the a whole chorus for us to sing Olé, olé, olé, olé is defo gonna be a crowd pleaser.

Melanie - Founder of Melanie's Muses - You should know who I am lol If not click - All about Melanie!
Basically the game is a huge warehouse split into 4 zones with a bunch of puzzle games in rooms - very much like modern day escape rooms - and yes some of them get locked in. One of the best things about it is that it still works very much today when you watch. Yes the hairstyles etc are a bit dated, but because of how the game is set up there is nothing there that dates it. Some of the exact puzzles were IN the escape room Susan and I did with Greg, just last year.
If you want something a bit different, that you don't really have to pay attention too, and you fancy yelling at the telly (because you will), then check it out. Especially as ALL the episodes are uploaded to YouTube by several people and noone cares enough about the show to get them pulled down!
Susan - Susan Harris is a writer from Cork, Ireland and when she’s not torturing her readers with heart-wrenching plot twists or killer cliffhangers, she’s probably getting some new book related ink, binging her latest TV or music obsession, or with her nose in a book. (Myself and Mel defo went full Crystal Maze mode when we did an escape room with Greg last year!)
Probably the best thing about the show was the host, Richard O'Brien. That man was hilarious, and would just run around the zones causing mischief and talking to himself. All of the reboots will never come close to the original.
Jenn - Jennifer Rhodes met Melanie back when True Blood was popular and they have been friends ever since. I also love the host who’s from one of my favorite shows rocky horror. Though be forewarned you might end up yelling idiot at the screen multiple times. I know that I sure did. If you’re looking for something light and fun then I highly suggest you give crystal maze a watch

I was a little late with this show but I'm so glad I was because that season one cliffhanger was a killer. This show follows the young prince of Sweden as he gets into trouble and ends up being sent to a boarding school. Willie is not too keen on this at first but then he ends up meet Simon and that basically changes his attitude towards everything until something tragic happens and he’s put in the spotlight even more.
Can these two figure things out, well I don’t know. I'm sure many have not seen Young Royals yet but trust me it’s definitely a must watch especially for any Heartstopper fan.
