Remakes were always a thing, even going back to the early days of movies. They’d remake a silent movie when talkies came out, etc. But the further we go, the more they remake. In todays world DVDs, Blu Rays, and five billion streaming channels, we feel there is less and less need for them. Most of them are pretty easy to find if you are interested in watching them. But Hollywood insists on rebranding and making a new version, trying to improve upon the original. “Psycho”? You can’t improve it. You can’t change it. You made the same movie again. Why? They are useless. Occasionally they get it right. Not all of these are winners though. Its a mixed bag. Some good, some bad, some just out of the box. Day 6 - Evil Dead - 1981 / 2013 - Dave One of the remakes that kinda got it right. Not bad. A little updated but overall good movie. Weird thing though. I was watching the original one before going to see the remake in the theaters and the tv shut itself off. Hmmm. Weird. I turn it back on, it turns off again. Hmmm. I turn it back on and it shuts off again. At this point, most people would say fuck it and leave the room. Not me. I’m dumb enough to turn it back on. At least it stayed on this time. Melanie says - I watched the original, and I watched the new one and they are both comparable. The Army of Darkness was always my favorite as it has more comedy involved but I think they did this one right! Have you seen it? What did you think? Original, Remake, or Neither? Day 5 - Jump Street - 1987 / 2012 - Jenn Some shows go from tv to movies, though if they do that then they’re usually very different from each other and this one isn’t any different. 21 Jump Street with Johnny depp, a very young Johnny Depp, was no exception. Its about these cops that just looked young, so they where put in a undercover operative that went to high schools and solved cases maybe regular officers couldn’t. now the remakes of these were not another show but movies instead. Two movies to be exact though I wasn’t a fan of the second one, the first one wasn’t too bad. Johnny Depp even had a cameo in the first. So that was cool. You know I love Johnny Depp, but then the second movie really got off track. Ok it was in college. Anyone can go to college, they wouldn’t need a younger looking officer for that but whatever. Anyways my advice is watch the series, then the first 21 jump street movie starring Chad Michael Murray and Jonah Hill, but definitely skip the second. It totally wasn’t needed. Melanie Says - I loved the original Jump Street TV show and have to say the remake of this into a movie wasn't bad. I agree that they didn't need the 2nd one (they really needed a better story for that), but the first one had enough nods to the original show (including the Johnny Depp Cameo), but in an updated fashion. Personally, I didn't care for the casting, but they did a decent job and if you liked the original show it is definitely worth a watch. Have you seen it? What did you think? Day 4 - Being Human - 2009 (UK) / 2011 (US) - MelanieThe first 3 seasons (well 2 1/2) of the UK Being Human are sublime! I adore them and even more so the main character Mitchell (who Greg HATES with a vengeance and calls him cry baby Mitchell - but I digress). My DaisyVamp name that still occurs in places was derived from Daisy who appears in Season 2 and LOVES her Vampire self. There's more story to that - but that is a tale for another time. The UK version is dark, and gritty, and well it sounds crazy but just more real. Sadly things take a turn in the creativity and although I tried to watch S4 - the cast change didn't work and they slowly replaced the whole cast until it was almost a reboot of the show all on its own..... but the first 3 (2 1/2 seasons - AMAZING) As with most amazing UK shows when the US tries to copy the premise it ends up being a fail. For me this is definitely one of those times. Em loved it (and that is pretty much the only reason I saw any past the pilot episode), and I understand the story fractured off after S1 and went its own way - but I didn't stick around to find out. This version was just too pretty for me, too Hollywood, and it lost some of the raw authenticity that I loved so much in the UK version. For me - the original wins - ALL THE WAY. (Plus it had Gilbert fun - I'll add that video below too lol) Dave Says - A vampire, a werewolf and a ghost live together. This sounds like the beginning of a joke. I heard about the show when the US version premiered. During the season, I watched the UK version. Some spoilers in the first season. A lot was the same then a few changes and then they splinter in Season 2 and have different stories. When the UK version changes its cast, it goes downhill fast. So much so that I stopped watching. At least the US version kept the cast the same in all 4 of their seasons so it didn't decline. Have you seen it? What did you think? Original, Remake, or Neither? Day 3 - Miranda (2009) Call Me Kat (2021) - Jenn"Call Me Kat" is the Americanized version of "Miranda", though pretty much after the first couple episodes it took its own turn, which I’m actually happy for. The few similarities they kept were the mom, and how Kat and Miranda can be so socially awkward but honestly you still have to love them anyways. Now if you’ve seen Miranda you know that Gary was it for Miranda, though they both dated different people at first, well Kat's Gary is named Max, and they belong together but you know how that goes. It will take awhile, but hopefully not to long. Call me Kat is funny and quirky and even if you like Miranda that’s alright because sometimes reboots aren’t for everyone. Dave Says - When I heard about making a US version of “Miranda”, I thought— how bad are they gonna screw this up?”. Admittedly, it took a little getting used to but it kept inching further away from the original material and forging new ground. Having the star, writer and producer of the original show, Miranda Hart, on board helps that. Melanie Says -NOPE! Greg and I couldn't get past the second episode. LOVE LOVE LOVE Miranda but for us the American one tried too hard to do the same thing - and it didn't work. Dave and Jenn assure me that it gets better but I am still not convinced. Also the original Miranda has Tom Ellis sooooo I mean come on! You can't beat that. Oh also Patricia Hodge as Penny (Miranda's Mum) - Enough said! Have you seen them? What did you think? Original, Remake, or Neither? Be sure to let us know in the comments below! Note the trailer is for Miranda Season 2 - but it gives you the idea. At the time of writing a trailer for Season 1 was unavailable (or at least Mel couldn't find it).

Day 2 - Flatliners (1990) / (2017) - DaveThe original was a near perfect, often overlooked piece of cinematic beauty. I was really confused by them remaking it. and the trailer turned me off so much I didn't even bother watching the remake. Melanie Says - I'm with Dave on this one! The original was fabulous and it probably didn't hurt that I was going through a watch everything Kiefer phase when it released. With a full out star cast this holds up even today and should be watched by everyone. The remake? I didn't get past the trailer - it is definitely one of those pieces that begs the question WHY?! Day 1 - E/R (1984) - ER (1994) - MelanieI am not sure how many people remember that there was E/R before there was ER! It used to be one of mine and my dad's favorite shows, and we watched every week without fail. It only ran for one season almost a decade before the far more successful ER started. The biggest difference is that the original was a comedy, well I guess now they would call it a "Dramady", but it wasn't the norm for hospital shows, and well maybe there's a reason for that but I LOVED it. As you will see in the trailer there were a LOT of big names from the time involved in the show, and funnily enough George Clooney doesn't get a look in but he was in it. He played a tech (I added an extra clip so you can see him in action). Who would have imagined that a decade later he would go on to star in a drama by the same name that really made his career! As for the remake (if you can really call it that) - well I loved that too. They were different, and the new version obviously went on to become a huge hit but the original holds a special place in my heart. Dave Says - Now, I don't do hospital dramas. They seem to have to been done to death and no end in sight. More and more are being made. And the current ones don't seem to want to die. But back in 1984 there was a comedy called “E/R”. Elliot Gould and a young George Clooney starred. Clooney probably has the unique, distinct honor of being the only actor to star in 2 shows with the same name (well, practically the same name).
