As many of you know I have read a lot, and I mean A LOT of vampire books over the years and so it takes something rather unusual to make me take notice. Vicky had been talking about the first book for a while, but she knows me well, and probably realized that the chances of me actually getting it were slim ... and so she sent it to me......and then when the second part came out she sent that too.
Blood Orange (book 1) starts with a plethora of trigger warnings, including a couple that I didn't actually understand and had to google (which got the book put on the shelf for a while - not because of any of the warnings, I am just not a fan of them in general). The trigger warnings can be summed up with - this is a dark vampire romance, with graphic bdsm scenes, and violence. It is definitely not a book that everyone will want to read (but remember you can enter the giveaway and I can send them to a Muser that WILL love them). Fans of the later books in Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake series would, I feel, enjoy the duet a lot. It does pull from a lot of Dracula references, which as I have read and watched many incarnations of that particular vampire, I definitely recognized the original source material. Karina also pulls from some Lovecraftian ideas, so there really is a lot going on. For me personally, I don't think the blurb does the series justice. The tagline "My Heart Will Always Find Yours" is definitely the important part and the rest, well the rest makes a lot more sense after you read the book - which is generally not the best plan for blurbs. I also felt that book 1 was stronger than the second one, but I like my reads dark, and the ending of book 1 definitely fits that, with book 2 conforming more to general reader expectations. Overall, I enjoyed reading what is probably the first series I have read "just for fun" since I can't even remember as usually everything has at least some tenuous link to work even if they are books I genuinely love.
