Oh Romeo and Juliet, the greatest love story ever told, or the subject of intense ridicule and bitching about wayward teenagers. Whichever side of the line you happen to stand on, one thing is for sure, I am willing to bet you at least know the basic story.
Ignoring the fact that they are teenagers (because people need to remember the time when this was written), this is, in my opinion, one of the best written tragic love stories out there. I have watched many of the movie versions, read many book interpretations (including one with vampires), I own the pops, the soundtrack to the 1996 movie, and many, many other references. It seems my favorites though are those that interpret the original material a little differently. In movies, this translates as Baz Luhrman's 1996 movie version with the original Shakespearean dialogue set in a modern day Verona and packed with fabulous musical numbers making the soundtrack a must listen (in my opinion). Packed full of stars too numerous to go into I will just say that Harold Perrineau's of Mercutio was so good I felt the need to include a bonus clip of his performance at the party. (And the Spotify Playlist) Moving to books, and we have the Defy the Stars series by Susan Harris. When I first read book one I described it as the "Magical Reimagining I Didn't Know I Needed". And that remains true to this day. Her tagline - if you think you know how this story ends ... you're wrong, couldn't be more apt with the main series being a trilogy and then there is a follow up novella too. I have enclosed the link to the first eBook as it is free and if you haven't read it - YOU SHOULD. Even if you have no interest in the Romeo and Juliet storyline - this adventure takes you so far out that fans or haters can both enjoy a fabulous fantasy series. So which side are you on? A great romance, or stupid teens? Not that your opinion will change mine in the slightest ..... because Shakespeare will always win.
