Melanie - Founder of Melanie's Muses - You should know who I am lol If not click - All about Melanie!Oh Doctor Who ... where to start. I've been watching Doctor Who since the 80's with Tom Baker (the 4th Doctor) being "My" Doctor - and he remained in top position for the longest time. If you had asked me 20 years ago if we would be celebrating the 60th Anniversary of this show WITH NEW EPISODES STILL AIRING - I would have said you were crazy - but here we are - and it is amazing! In 1989 the "Classic" as it is now referred too Who went off the air. Sylvester McCoy was the 7th Doctor at the time and everyone thought that was the end. I mean at that point the show had it's 7th main actor and had been running since 1963 so noone was that surprised. Then in 1996 there was a movie - with the often overlooked 8th Doctor Paul McGann that was a complete flop and again we all thought that was it. Then in 2005 something amazing happened. Russel T Davies (RTD), who had been lobbying the BBC for years, was able to bring in a new era of Who. 16 years after the show went off the air new episodes were back, with a new Doctor, and a new format. Whereas the original series had big story arcs that went across lots of episode, RTD had a different idea. The new Who would be set in a more "episode of the week" format that welcome in new viewers. There were nods, references, and complete storylines that classic Whovians could enjoy but more importantly a whole new generation could discover the show too. Plus, for Season 2 - my now all time Favorite Doctor David Tennant (#10).
Now, as we pass the 60th Anniversary, Whovians find themselves looking at yet another big transition. The "specials" that have just aired allows even non fans to jump in from NOW. Are the episodes better if you know the background? I will always say yes, but my mum, who has never liked Who CALLED me after the first one aired telling me I had to watch. They even start the special NOT with the transitioning to the new Doctor as in previous cases, BUT just like the 2005 restart you get to start where the story is NOW. They even have a little bit of a recap for the bits you need to help you get the references in the new ones. As everything is still in that transition phase, with yet another Season 1 about to start, if you are feeling confused don't worry. Most of us old Whovians don't really have a set plan of how it will be named either, but we are just rolling with it. Personally I like New New Who (which is a reference to New New York), but I don't think that will happen. New Who for the 2005 era isn't really new now but the 1963-1989 (and 1996 movie) will always be the classic. So if you haven't already started get ready to run, remember that big hair means big spoilers, and whatever you do NEVER NEVER EVER pack a bag! How To Watch In The U.S. Classic Who (The available episodes - some were lost in the archives) from 1963- Streaming with a Britbox Subscription There are also a lot of episodes on Tubi 1996 movie - I couldn't find it streaming free but it often pops up places New Who (9th -13th Doctor) 2005-2022 HBO MAX New New Who - The 60th Anniversary Specials and the 14th Doctor (Starting Christmas) - Disney+ Jenn - Jennifer Rhodes met Melanie back when True Blood was popular and they have been friends ever since. Jennifer is now a proud member of the VIPers - the Melanie's Muses Spotlight Feature Team! This show has been 60 years in the making and younger me thought it was just for Sci-fi nerds, but boy was I wrong. “Doctor Who” is so much more than what I was expecting and what a journey I’ve been on, though I’ve never seen all of the classics but I plan to though, eventually. But 26 seasons of classics is a daunting task to have on your plate. If you’re a new fan coming into the Whoverse, you can start with the 15th Doctor Ncuti Gatwa which has been dubbed New Who. Though my suggestion is start with Regular Who— the 2005 reboot. I know it can get confusing but so can the doctor at times. I mean he is a time traveling alien with two hearts, who picks up friends and takes them on these amazing adventures. Sounds wild, well it can be because there’s also monsters along the way. All kinds. I really won’t get into much more detail because I know some muser have never watched and like River Song would say — “Spoilers.” I will also say though that the 60th anniversary episodes have been some of my all time favorites especially “The Giggle” The Pineapple Code Word For This Article Is Whovian And Now For The GiveawayMelanie's Muses will be giving away a Doctor Who Prize pack with items that connect with several of the series - but as it's Christmas you will have to wait and see what's in it!
