Most of the world was introduced to world of "Saw" through the eyes of James Wan and Leigh Whannell in 2004. It took me a little longer to discover them. I had heard about it when it first came out, but don't think I looked that close into them. They were often described in the press as "torture porn" and it didn't really seem like something I was going to like. The way they were being described, it just seemed like people getting mutilated like in a "Faces of Death" movie and I had exactly zero interest in seeing those.
It wasn’t until I accidently caught clips of the first one years later, after the 4th one was out, while my niece was watching it, that I realized there was a little more to them. There was a police story, a real plot, a backstory, layers and twists! Oh my God, the twists! The ways these stories are woven together is a piece of work. Sometimes it’s the tiniest thread that is interlaced in a flashback, 3 movies later with the revelation you did not see coming.
One thing you always hear a lot about is the traps. Contrary to popular belief, they aren’t made just to hurt, kill and torture. In a way, they are life lessons and about choices. Whether they are choices you previously made to put you in this situation or sometimes they teach to work together. Or try to anyway. In one of these cases, they don't realize they were supposed to work until after they sacrificed all the other victims. (Oooops!)
Between 2003-2010, they released one movie a year. Even after the main character died, the series continued without the typical horror trickery of "oh, he didn't really die" or "he escaped" or something supernatural like that. Nope, he's really dead. There are other strings to be pulled behind the scenes.
After a 7-year hiatus, the Saw franchise was resurrected with "Jigsaw", continuing his legacy with a new cast of characters and the intricacies we have to expect from the Saw movies. A ninth movie, "Spiral: From the Book of Saw" is currently delayed but is scheduled for release in 2021.
