Give me an older movie over a new one any day, and I’m not talking those old ones by just a few years but classics like this next movie I want to talk about, and that’s "Overboard". Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are absolute gold in this movie. My only complaint is when it ended it left me wanting more. Now that doesn’t mean I hated the ending, I just wanted more. But I guess the writers did it like that on purpose.
Anyways, this movie is about a rich heiress who thinks the world and everyone in it revolve around her. Joanna hires Dean to build her a closet in her yacht, but not liking how it’s done she refuses to pay him. She ends up falling off her yacht in the middle of the ocean, losing her memory in the process. Her husband goes to the hospital but decides he doesn’t want to be around her anymore so takes off leaving her there. Dean sees what’s going on in the local news and decides to get his revenge for what happened and the money she owes him.
Now if you haven’t seen this before, you might be thinking "what a jerk". But honestly even if craziness ensues, it all works out in the end. This romantic comedy classic is not to be missed and it definitely will be one to rewatch over and over again. Now, in 2018 there was a remake, yes, I saw and no I didn’t like it. This is one of those times that I wish they just would have left well enough alone.

This movie is absolutely one of my favorites, even if it’s older and if you haven’t seen it then honestly where have you been? That movie is "The Goonies". It is often dubbed a cult classic, which it is. I watch it every time that I happen to catch it on tv. This movie follows a group of friends, known by other as the goonies because they just happen to live on a goon dock. There is a developer wanting to destroy their house along with a bunch of others.
So that’s when Mikey and the other goonies set out to find One Eyed Willies treasure. Tying up his brother Brand, they run off and get into a bunch of trouble along the way in the form of the Fratelli family. Where does their adventure lead them? What new friends do they find along the way? Do they find the treasure and save their homes? I can’t answer that. Now being this movie was made in 1985 I’m sure a lot of you may have already seen it, but if you haven’t sat back and enjoy the adventure of "The Goonies".
Dave-
It takes many pieces of a puzzle to make everything work and click into place. A movie is no different. The right cast. The right director. The right writer. Even the right timing. "The Goonies" is one of those quintessential 80's movies that had everything lined up perfectly. To top off everything else it had going for it, they even added pop star Cyndi Lauper to belt out the theme song.
One interesting note is one of the last lines in it was very confusing to those of us that saw it in the 80's. "The octopus was scary!" What octopus? Did I miss something? Nope. The octopus encounter was a deleted scene. It didn't make the final cut. It wasn't until years later (more like decades later!) that I actually saw that scene.
This movie continues to bring inspiration in todays features and series. I see reflections of it in stuff like "Super 8" (more on that later. Shh! Its top secret.) & "Stranger Things". This wasn't just another dumb teenage comedy, or romp, this was a full-blown adventure! Yes, it had a young cast but it reels you right to in to ride along with them. It has everything. Humor, action, thrills, and chills! Take my hand, if you will, and join me. Coz Goonies never say die.

Pretty woman walking down the street. Pretty woman the kind I’d like to meet. Now not only is this a song but it’s also a movie. "Pretty Woman" starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere has to be one of the best classic movies out there. We all know the classic love story monologue. Rich guy falls for poor girl or vise versa. Well what if not only is the girl poor, but she’s also a hooker as well. That would make for some fun but maybe not so classy story telling. Edward is basically just trying to find his hotel in Beverly Hills, but ends up taking a wrong turn somewhere and that’s exactly how he runs into Vivian. Helping him get to his hotel, for twenty bucks of course, Vivian doesn’t realize she just might have met the one guy who can change her life. Edward realizes that he might just need her help the morning after. I don’t mean for one night or even just two either. Now is it for the better, or possibly for the worse? Who knows but I do know is that if you haven’t seen this movie you really should check it out. Not only will it have you laughing out loud, but it also just might have you wondering could those fated chances be real.
Melanie -
I love this movie! I remember when it came out and suddenly the idea of being a hooker seemed like it might actually have some appeal lol. Of course in reality, the chances of a Vivian type situation happening are infinitesimal, but that's what makes this movie so great .... because it just FEELS like it could happen!
The casting for this movie was literally lightening in a bottle. One of those rare occasions that not only do the leads have amazing chemistry, (I mean it was so good that they paired up again almost a decade later for Runaway Bride - another must watch!), but the supporting cast is excellent in their own right. My personal favorites are Hector Elizondo as Barney - the hotelier with a heart of gold (although seriously he is fabulous in EVERYTHING he does), and Laura San Giacomo as Kit, the sort of best friend that everyone needs in their corner. As Jenn already opened this with the song riff, I am going to finish up be mentioning the soundtrack too. Everyone knows the Pretty Woman song by the late, great Roy Orbison, but I am also betting that you've heard the song "It Must Have Been Love" by Roxette. This song launched the Swedish group into a whole other stratosphere - and rightly so - even though if you want to hear my favorite by them check out "What's She Like" from their 1994 Album Crash Boom Bang! I'll even post the video for you lol. Code Word For This Article Is - Vivian

Older movies have to be some of the best movies out there, and this one is definitely no exception. It also has to be one of the best tales of friendship out there that there is, and yes, I’m talking about "Fried Green Tomatoes". Now this movie is about a woman named Evelyn and her husband who every week go to see his aunt at the nursing home. On one of these visits, she just happens to meet Ninny, a lady living at the nursing home for the time being. Not realizing how Ninny or the story that she tells Evelyn every time she visits about two friends named Idgie and Ruth will change her life for the better, Evelyn takes a shining to ninny and visits her whenever she can. Who are idgie and Ruth, and how do these two ladies that Evelyn has never met but only heard of change her life for the better?
Well, you just have to watch and find out. I’m sure most have seen this movie by now since it is older. It also happens to be a book as well, which I just found that out not to long ago. So, whether you read or watch "Fried Green Tomatoes", and hey some might even eat them, which I have and they’re delicious. Either way I promise you that you won’t regret it.

Man, if you’ve seen my articles than you know I like older shows and movies. This one definitely fits into that cult classic category or at least I think it does. The only problem with this movie is that it leaves you wanting more, and yes, I mean “Dirty Dancing”. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey are perfect as Baby and Johnny.
You can feel their chemistry jump off the screen when you watch. I guess you could call it a Cinderella story with a twist.
Well, I don’t know because it always left me wondering if Baby and Johnny actually stay together. Well back to the beginning. Baby ends up going to a country club with her family one summer on vacation. Being the youngest child and with her father’s eyes always on her, Baby seems to want something more. And boy does she find that in Johnny, who just happens to be the dance instructor of the club. Ruggedly handsome. You know the type. Well, a casual meet between these two turns into something more than either of them expects, and especially not Baby’s father.
What happens between these two, well I’m sure you’ve seen the movie. But if by some chance you haven’t, then I guess you finally just need to watch and find out. Jennifer Bollnow Jennifer Bollnow is a TVaholic with no possibility or desire to rehab. She met Melanie when they worked together on the former Voice of TV website. She especially loves sci-fi, fantasy, Christmas movies and anything with Patrick Swayze. She loves helping people find their new favorite series. Her current obsession is Outlander. This is her fourth guest article for Melanie's Muses!
It was the summer of 1963, when everyone called me baby and it didn’t occur to me to mind” And so begins the beautiful coming of age story, Dirty Dancing. We follow Frances “Baby” Houseman on her family’s summer vacation in the Catskills resort, Kellerman’s. Baby crosses paths with Johnny Castle and the entertainment staff and her life is changed forever.
Dirty Dancing was released in 1987. Starring Jennifer Grey as Baby, Patrick Swayze as Johnny Castle and Jerry Orbach as Dr. Jake Houseman. The movie was written by Elanor Bergstein and loosely based on her experiences growing up in the 60’s near the Catskills and music and dancing of the times. The award-winning soundtrack made the movie a complete experience. Most everyone knows the quote “Nobody puts Baby in a corner” but my favorite is “I carried a watermelon…I carried a watermelon?!?”
My mom was addicted to movie rentals, so every weekend she would bring home the latest releases. I was in Junior High and when she brought home Dirty Dancing something struck me about this movie. I wasn’t a dance fan but the music and the story were so enthralling. I was/am still obsessed. I had posters, the soundtrack, I even had it painted on my senior jacket. Then I went on a Patrick Swayze spiral. It began my love affair with everything he was in. I went to the 20th anniversary dressed as Baby. I even had a snake name Swayze. Sadly, he passed in 2009. My love for him and Dirty Dancing never will.

Mel Brooks. The name itself can bring laughter and memories of many hit films. He found his niche in humor and ran with it without looking back. Throughout the years, he has had many hits-- "History of the World Part 1", "Blazing Saddles", "Spaceballs", "Silent Movie" and the list goes on. The one we want to focus on today is the 1974 classic "Young Frankenstein".
If by chance you never saw this wonderful piece of cinematic history, you only have to know one thing about it. It was written by Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder. That should tell you the pure comedic genius of it before seeing a single frame. How could this not be great with those minds behind it? The acting line up is first class too. Besides Gene Wilder, we have Gene Hackman, Teri Garr, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn and Peter Boyle. The star power is through the roof!
The story is about Professor Frankestein trying to put his family's mad scientist past behind him, even though he constantly asked about it. After inheriting the family estate in Transylvania, he travels to inspect the property and that's where the fun begins. So many classic lines in this. I have a hundred moments going through my head even as I write this. I feel a Mel Brooks marathon coming on.

Jennifer is now a proud member of the VIPers - the Melanie's Muses Spotlight Feature Team!Magic, witches and wizards all make up these famous, popular movies and yes, I’m talking about the Harry Potter series. They were popular books before they where movies, but I never read them, so I will just be talking about the movies. I was still in school when I saw the first movie, so yes thinking about how long it’s been I feel old. These movies and books follow a wizard named Harry Potter, though because he lives with his horrible aunt and uncle, he doesn’t realize that until he’s about 11 years old, that’s when his life changes forever. He gets to go to Hogwarts, a magical school for witches and wizards. He’s also famous in his world, for stopping he who must not be named. Once realizing that he is a wizard Harry is excited to go to school and get away from his dreadful aunt and uncle. These eight movies follow him and his friends on their journey to not only protect each other and those they love, but Hogwarts as well, and to stop Voldemort in a final showdown that’s honestly not to be missed, now I won’t go much else into detail because I’m sure you’ve seen these movies by now, or have even read the books, but if not then you definitely should and there’s no better time for that than the 20th anniversary, so sit back relax and enjoy. Dave says - Dave Christy loves horror, music, documentaries and more. Other than "In The Spotlight" Features -check out his "31 Days Of Halloween Movies"Nothing like reading Jenn's part and making me feel even older. Gee, thanx dear! She was in school when the movie hit, and I was still married. But that brings me to my introduction to the movies. The buzz was floating around about the first movie adaptation. I actually didn't know much about it but was curious. I believe I had a movie pass or gift certificates so I didn't actually have to pay for it so I decided to check it out opening day. The theatre was packed and my wife and mother-in-law were making fun of me for going to see "a kids movie". (Stay tuned, that will change). I loved it and went on to buy the DVD when it came out. That’s when my wife and mother-in-law decided to watch also and loved it. We proceeded to start on the books and going to see the next movies all together. Everyone knows the story about the 3 friends that banded together against the odds even though they didn't start out on the best terms. So, I won't go into too much detail on that. One thing I think the movies suffered from was trying to squeeze the books into a 2-hour movie. The first couple films were fine. They stayed pretty faithful to the books. As each book got a little bit longer, that required a little more editing. They couldn't release a 6-hour movie. Well, they could. I wouldn't mind a 6-hour movie if I got to see everything included in the books. If they ever remade these (which would probably be a crime punishable by death to most fans), the only thing I see acceptable is an animated style, filling in the novel-length movies. Namely Headless Nick's Death Day party, the flashback of young Snape, James, and Lily and the Marauders. A lot of information missing. Azkaban doesn't even mention, or hint at, that James, Lupin, Sirius, and Pettigrew were the ones that made the map. For the ones that read the books, you know by the time we got to The Deathly Hallows, we had over 700 pages of story to go into. The fans can sit through that long of a movie but the general public can not. That goes back to what I just said. Animated "novel versions" of the movies. Some fans even made them for us-- of sorts. While these were still new, I saw some Sims versions on YouTube. They had taken the audiobook and programmed the Sims characters to act out the dialog. Very interesting. But not all the books were completed and some got removed for copywrite infringement and the channels closed. Anyway, this is my little piece of remembrance about the introduction and thoughts. Wands up! Melanie - My introduction to the series was a little unusual. My dad had been looking into getting his book published, and had come across an article from JK Rowling talking about how hard it had been to get her first story out there. Intrigued with the concept he picked up book one (which in England is actually called "The Philosopher's Stone") and when he finished he brought the book over when he came to visit and told me to read it. I wasn't convinced - it was a middle grade story about a wizarding school - cute - but I didn't see the big deal. Eventually the movie came out and I watched that - and then went back to find the book, and read the series (as far as it was released to). I think the wizarding world is fabulous. I think it's an amazing way to introduce children to magic, and the story grows into so much more, and is so much darker. Of course having Alan Rickman playing Snape had no influence on me originally wanting to see the movie AT all. And with that - I will wipe away a tear and join Dave with ending with "Wands Up". Smokin! If you have seen this movie then you probably have heard this popular line by this cult classic character, and that’s Jim Carrey’s "The Mask", which I recently just saw again after awhile. It made me remember that I really do love this movie. It’s about a normal working-class guy, down on his luck, which we’ve all been there. Stanley, or just Iipkiss as they call him in the movie after his last name, finds this strange mask in the water one night. Not knowing then what it is, he takes it home. Soon realizing that this mask can make things happen and it’s not at all normal. I’m not going to get into that because if you by chance haven’t seen it then I’m not going to be the one to ruin it for you. In the end a lot of lessons are learned like we may put on masks to hide at times. But are they really needed because being yourself is always a whole lot better, and you’d be surprised at how many people like you for you? Also, it’s just a fun movie to watch if you need something light, because it will make you smile more than once.

Chucky, the only horror anything I really like so when I found out they where making a Chucky series for television I got excited. It felt like it took forever but it finally premiered a few weeks ago, and what better time then in October. Now even better is that it’s the original voice actor who voiced Chucky in the movies, and no not the remake (Dave note: that was voiced by none other than Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill), that does not exist. Remake? What remake? You can’t do Chucky without Charles Lee Ray. Sorry but you can’t. Now, another amazing aspect of this series is that Tiffany will be back, yes that’s Chucky's wife. She’s amazing, and my favorite. "Bride of Chucky" was the best Chucky to date, well that is until this series. It’s also nice to see the messages it spreads about awareness for bullying and homophobia.
Now before I get preachy let’s move on. This series does have a different feel than the movies, though there’s a lot of movie nods which are always cool to see. By different, I mean the feel of Chucky isn’t the same as it was in the movies. If you’re watching the show and have seen the original chucky movie than you might understand what I mean. It’s like they’re trying to make Chucky more likable which is actually working because the other characters besides Chucky, Jake and Devon are just so unlikable you might find yourself rooting for Chucky more than once. His friendship with Jake just seems more real as well. He just wanted to use Andy, but this seems like he actually cares about Jake and wants to help, if that makes sense. Well, whatever the case may be this show is excellent and I for one can’t wait to see it unfold.

When I first heard they were making a Chucky series, I was a little skeptical. It usually isn't tv friendly fare. Then I heard that Don Mancini was involved. This gave me a little more hope. Early interviews and reports about the show confirmed they were continuing the story of the original movies which is definitely the preferred way to go. No more remakes. No more reboots. Color me intrigued. The trailer looked good but still left me with me questions. The main characters are in a high school, and are around 14 years old and this kid is carrying a Chucky doll? Why? However, watching the show explains it well.
The object of the horror genre is to build suspense and wait for the kill. So, some of these characters want you to see their death on screen and hope it is as satisfying as you imagine it. But of course, it needs to be built upon. You can't kill everyone in the first couple episodes and have no one left. So, it looks like we may just have one per week until the 8 episodes are up. I already have guesses to where it might end up going. In this town, it can only be so long before Chucky has to move on. So, if this series will continue to run, we may see a different set of characters every season. I can't see it staying in one town for a long time. We'll run out of people pretty quick.
Melanie -
Our daughter Em, as many of you know, is a HUGE Child's Play fan. From a very young age she has loved this little doll, and then loved Tiffany even more, so we have had LOTS of updates as this was coming to fruition. Normally we are all pretty much on the same page, but even though Em loves the new series... Jenn and Dave love the new series .... Greg and I just can't get into it. The idea is great - love what they are doing with Chucky - our hang up is that the main kids are meant to be 14/15. Maybe we are just old. But drink, and drunk, and unsupervised full out rager parties were definitely not a part of the Middle School experience even when Em was there less than 10 years ago. The premise is sound - the tie in to the movies (other than the remake which for the record I liked lol) is OK - It is probably close to impossible to cover all the lore and get it right - but original characters are popping up and there was a nice nod to Glen/Glenda.
I will probably finish out the series to see where it goes - like I said the story premise interests me ..... As to how fast will ultimately depend on whether Greg decides to watch too. Right now the jury is out on that one!
