Chances are if you were alive in 1984, you said "Who you gonna call?" at least once, or 100 times, a week. Yeah, probably closer to the 100 times a week. Everyone was saying the catchphrase synonymous with "Ghostbusters". Ghosts weren't the only thing they were busting either. It was busting open the box office also. Although, it almost looked very different. Other actors considered for the main roles were Chevy Chase, John Lithgow, Michael Keaton, Christopher Lloyd, Gregory Hines, Julia Roberts and Eddie Murphy (depending on which story you want to believe). One says it was written for Eddie; one denies it.
Any way you slice it, what we ended up with was all-star phenomenal cast. No matter what other big names were thrown around, I honestly can't picture anyone else in these roles. The actors aren't everything though. It all had to fall into place. The writer, director, special effects, the cast and yes, even the chemistry. If one thing was out of place, this could have been the biggest box office flop in the history of cinema. But alas, the stars aligned and we are left with an incredible masterpiece.
"Ghostbusters" became a very profitable franchise with comic books, toys, video games, a slew of merchandise and more movies. How many movies is a purely debatable topic. Some would say they only observe the original and deny the rest even exist. The sequel has its critics and its fans. Personally, I loved it almost as much as the original. Then there is the very criticized female-led cast of the 2016 film. I watched it. I didn't love it but didn't hate it as much as others. I think the joke went over some people's heads. One complaint I kept hearing was the character of the male secretary. "Stupid, no depth, all looks, no substance, etc". Ummm, isn't that the kind of depth a lot of females in movies get? And now suddenly its bad it has a male character like that? It went completely over everyone's heads.
Melanie here - I LOVED the 2016 one - thought it was super clever and funny!
Next, we have the upcoming "Ghostbusters: Afterlife", which was previously delayed but is currently slated for this year. I have to admit I was a little hesitant about resurrecting the franchise like this but after watching the trailer, I'm kinda excited for it. Will it be as good as the others? Can't say for sure yet but I will definitely give it a chance before blowing it off. Who you gonna call? Not me. Just send a text instead.
