Bordello Of Blood (From Dave Christy)
This week’s feature has a little bit of background to it. I was doing some pre-planning for the next 31 Days of Horror and sending Mel’s a preliminary list of about 40 movie possibilities I had so far. One of which was "Tales from the Crypt: Bordello of Blood". She was skeptical, thinking "Demon Knight" was a much better choice. First, I thought we could do it like we had on the previous 31 Days. I have my views on "Bordello of Blood", and she puts why she thinks it should be "Demon Knight". However, since most of those 31 Days articles were just small blurbs, this is a “go big or go home" type thing so we are going all out.
1996 brought us "Bordello of Blood". Being a "Tales from the Crypt" fan and a fan of Dennis Miller's comedy, and a fan of vampire movies, I was interested right away. It already had 3 steps in the right direction before stepping into the movie theatre. I didn't really see anything about the making of, etc. Remember, this was 25 years ago. No blu rays, no internet, no behind the scenes blogs, tweets, and all that stuff you see today. So, in 2015 when Scream Factory released a Special Edition Blu Ray with interviews and a commentary, I had to pick it up. That’s when I heard about all the trouble during the making of this movie.
OK, so first off, the director and the crew were hired to make an entirely different movie but somewhere along the line, it was decided they were making this. I'd call that a slight monkey-wrench into the planning stages. They wanted one of the Baldwin's in the lead role. The studio wanted Dennis Miller. Oooooooooookay. I don't see this working out with a Baldwin. Or, at least if it did, it definitely wouldn’t have had the same vibe. Dennis Miller didn't even want to do the movie to begin with! So, he asked for the ridiculous salary of $1 million....and they gave it to him! (Can someone pay me a million dollars to do a job I don't want to do? Please?)
On top of that, we all know Dennis is a comedian. He kept adlibbing lines and not sticking to the script. You know what that means? Plot points are getting lost and never mentioned. Then of course, we have our lead actress, Erika Eleniak (btw, ex- Playboy Playmate-turned-actress-- yes, that is key information). Two days before filming is due to begin, she decides she wants to be taken more seriously in the business so she doesn't want to play a stripper. So her role has to be re-written or they don't have a lead actress. Shouldn't she have considered this before signing the contract?
So yeah, this movie seems to have gone through the ringer and then some. But all things considered, it was a good entry into the horror/comedy genre. I guess it shows the real struggle that goes into the making of the movie behind the scenes. Everything from the writing to the editing had to be pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle.
Dave Christy loves horror, music, documentaries and more. He is also the co-runner of several fan based groups including Morningstars (THE Lucifer fan group also run by Melanie), and now is a member of the VIPers Spotlight Lounge team for Melanie's Muses. And now onto Susan's review - How did I get this book? Ordered from Amazon. Why did I choose to read this book: Anyone who has read my Sanguine Crown series knows how much of an Anita Blake and Laurell K Hamilton fan I am and getting Rafael so soon after Sucker Punch AND an ebook coming this Sunday, I had to scoop this up. First Impressions: The book gives us a closer look at the wererats, and the rodere as well as Rafael, who had remained a side character who had a much bigger story to tell. General Review Rafael was a quick read where we delved deeper into the world of the wererats, and we learned so much more about the rodere. I loved getting to see the different groups of shapeshifters, (Melanie - *cough Therienthropes cough* ) because with Anita having her closest lovers in different animal factions, we never got to know the rats. I loved seeing how strong-willed Claudia was and how brutal the wererats could be. The novel, (or novella maybe, because LKH’s books tend to be wrist breaker in size, considering I have them all in hard copy : Melanie - I debated too and settled on Novel lol), though packed with delicious rat goodness, did give those of us who have a soft spot for a certain vampire and leopards something to smile about as well. Final Thoughts Having read Raphael, I was left with some feelings toward the king of rats I wasn’t expecting…and not in a good way. I’m eager to see how the storyline plays out in further books, to see if my opinion might change but without giving away any spoilers or influencing anyone else, I’m keeping my thoughts to myself …for now …well…I told Melanie and she agrees so there is that! (Melanie - Yup - FACT!) Rating An easy 5 stars for me- any book that shows us just how badass Anita is will always win me over. A fast paced, no holds bar read that will leave hungry for more.
