My review:
I’ve been a fan of J.R Ward’s since picking up Dark Lover, BDB book1 a long, long time ago and was blown away at how dark it was and the banter between the brothers. Ward isn’t afraid to have her men damaged, ahem Zsadist (swoon) but she’s also not afraid to let them be up front with there emotions as well. Her characters are flawed, making them even more relatable and you can’t help but devour the series. It's also one of my go to rereads if I’m in a reading funk. The Jackal took us to a hidden part of the old glymera’s prison camp, one where those aristocratic snobs- now, I wanted to use a stronger word but you can supplement your own here. Long forgotten after the raids that wiped out half the aristocracy, a cruel and vicious person has risen to take command of the prison. It’s not long before you find out that a some of the prisoners have been imprisoned without a fair trail or even a proper justification of guilt. I’m going to admit, I wasn’t keen on Nyx when The Jackal began. She came off as selfish, determined to find her sister no matter what hurt it may cause to those who had already suffered a great deal. As the book progressed, she started to grow on me…a little… but this book was more about one male and his path to finding his way home. A hundred years in the prison camp for a crime he didn’t commit, The Jackal has adjusted to his surroundings, even made some friendships that might surprise you. We already knew his past and the brotherhood would be entwined, and through flashbacks, we get to revisit Rhage and Darius’ past as well. I was excited when I saw promos where Darius was mentioned, as I really did like the brother before he passed unto the fade. (Sorry- spoiler…but hey I did warn you) It was already teased that The Jackal was Rhage’s brother, however the flashbacks gave us a glimpse at just how important The Jackal was to the very foundations the Brotherhood stands on now. The Prison Camp spin off takes us on an exciting fork in the round with interesting new characters that make me excited to see who will get their own books. A few other surprises from the book that made me think, I like where this is going. All in all, The Jackal was an easy, enjoyable read and a welcome addition to the Black Dagger Brotherhood world. it’s an easy 4 stars for me
