Welcome to Melanie's Magical Christmas Movies! Every day in December, leading up to Christmas, Melanie will present one of her favorite Christmas movies complete with a trailer (and hopefully where you can watch it!)
Day 4- The Hogfather (2006) And now for something totally different! Day 4 brings you The Hogfather. Technically it was released as 2 part miniseries rather than a movie (think IT), and even now depending where you watch it, it will probably pop up as 2 parts. But I am still counting it. The first of the late, great, Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld series to be converted to screen, this provides a Christmas story unlike anything shows before. What if Santa was unavailable and Death had to fill in or there would be insane consequences? Yes that is the crux of this fantastical adventure. Complete with a plethora of stars including David Jason, Michelle Dockery, Mark Warren, and narrated by Ian Richardson (who sadly passed just after this originally aired), this is a Christmas movie that is even suitable for those that don't like Christmas! I had the honor of meeting Sir Terry when I was much younger, when my dad took me to one of his readings, because my dad was a fan. I wish now that I had realized how much of a legend stood before me. He was a scholar, and a gentleman, he encouraged a young girl to keep reading way above what people expected, my dad to write if he felt the pull, and he had an imagination that continues to live on in his work. This is currently streaming free with ads in many places. Or click the links below and add Acorn TV to your line-up (I highly recommend that anyway) and enjoy add free! Day 3- The Holiday (2006) This movie ALMOST made my top 10 Must Watch for this year, and looking back I should have added some honorable mentions but I am making up for this now. I thought this was a really well known movie, but then I was taking a Buzzfeed quiz (I know not exactly the most RELIABLE source), but it claimed that 55% of the quiz takers had answered "Never Seen It". That sealed my decision to include it here and I would LOVE to know how many of you haven't seen it! If you haven't, even if you don't love Christmas movies, this is a perfect RomCom just happening around the Holidays. In this house it gets watched at any time of the year (OK OK Yes I know, so do some actual Christmas movies), but this one works. Maybe it hits a little closer to home because Greg and I met on the internet, maybe because the youngest girl sounds exactly how Emily used to when we first moved here, but honestly it is just a really good story! Fans of movies in general will laugh at the creating a movie trailer (we can all relate to how misleading THEY can be), and music in movies is always a favorite topic and you get to see a little behind the scenes for that too. I have heard people say Jack Black is not suited for a leading romantic role, (I would dare you to say that to my mum lol), I have heard people say that Cameron Diaz annoys them, (I understand personal preference but she is amazing in this), and throw in Kate Winslet and Jude Law, and really there just isn't a place for it to go wrong. So grab yourself a hot chocolate, count your mini marshmallows in it if you have them, and settle back and enjoy! Let me know what you think in the comments - Stream it or Skip it?

Day 2 - Santa Clause The Movie (1985) How many of you read that and immediately thought about the Tim Allen Santa Clause Movies? For some reason this little gem seems to get lost in the Christmas Movies list but I love it. With some big names such as Dudley Moore and John Lithgow, you would think this would be a shoe in. Sadly negative reviews seemed to have hit this one hard. The biggest complaint? There is no real big bad guy! The movie mixes real world and Christmas North Pole fun, and some lessons about why some things need to be the way they are. It also has an interesting "legend of Santa" which even now would catch my attention. I remember when this released on video that the wait list for it was IMMENSE and it seemed to take forever to get to see it. And I was not disappointed. If you haven't seen it, check it out, and open your heart to a little Christmas fun. If you HAVE seen it, let me know what you thought! Am I the only one that thinks this should get more love? (I mean honestly that wouldn't be the first time lol) Let us know what you think in the comments - Stream it or Skip it?

Day 1 - Happiest Season (2020) December hasn't always meant Christmas to me, as my Facebook memories regularly show me, I was definitely more in with the Grinch, and last minute throwing up of the tree, than all out Christmassing. My posts were so different from my feelings now, that when I shared one this year Krista thought it might be one of those coded kidnapped messages asking for help! So what does this have to do with the movie? This is a movie about acceptance of many things, including Christmas. With a cast that includes Dan Levy there was no way we were missing out on this. I'm seeing a LOT of bad reviews, reviews saying it isn't representative of the acceptance they want to see, reviews saying that this isn't the holiday movie the community wants. I can't speak for what the LGBTQ community wants, but I can say I think this is a movie that people will want to watch, and I feel that with several actively prominently diverse cast staring in it, at least some of them I am sure had a say. I am sure it is one that will get watched often for Dan Levy alone. I know Kristen Stewart gets a lot of hate but in this (and in the new Charlie's Angels) she was fabulous! Throw in some other big hitters like Victor Garber and Aubrey Plaza and this Hulu Original has earned its spot on my Magical Christmas Movies!
