My spoiler free review for To The Death by Andrea Tang Blurb About The Book
Eighteen-year-old Samantha Chan wants only one thing: revenge for her brother’s death in an illegal magical duel. Ever since that terrible day, she’s been quietly working with legitimate dueling champion Lysander Rook and biding her time until she can take down her brother’s killer: Mateus Blackwood. Tamsin Blackwood is trapped. She wants to make a name for herself in the magical dueling circuit, but she can’t get away from the legacy of her father—and coach—Mateus Blackwood. When she receives a challenge from the undefeated Lysander and his assistant Sam, she jumps at the chance to earn enough fame and glory to finally escape her father’s influence. Tamsin has no idea about Sam’s scheming, and Sam plans to keep it that way. Despite herself, though, she can’t help liking Tamsin, and the two girls quickly grow closer to each other than anyone else in their lives. But Sam won’t let anything get in the way of her revenge—not even her heart. REVIEW Standalone or series? Standalone How did I get this book? I was offered an ARC from the Publisher. Why did I choose to read this book: I thought the story i dea had potential Genre Listed as YA Thriller with Sapphic content - but is really just a YA Arcane Magic Tale And Now To The Review! First Impressions: This is the first book I have read by the authors and it starts off strong - I always appreciate being thrown in with action. General Review This is a fast-paced read that is super light on the romance, to the extent that the description of "sapphic magicians colliding" is a stretch at best. That being said, I enjoyed the first 3/4 of the story a lot. Although the world-building isn't super in-depth, you are given more than enough to quickly get a feel for how everything works, and the magic duels are insanely creative. The revenge arc is well thought out and without giving spoilers, has one of the best villain responses I have seen outside of a KDrama. Final Thoughts The final 1/4 of the book I found rushed and the ending especially seemed to come out of nowhere. You aren't left with any kind of cliffhanger, although the story and the world itself would definitely lend to other adventures, but I was just left feeling underwhelmed. Rating: Overall 3 1/2 stars. (It would have been a solid 4 for the first 3/4 of the book) ** Disclosure** Any Links To Buy On Amazon Is My Amazon Affiliate Link.(As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases - Which helps provide for the giveaways! |
